This has been asked many times. If you search you may find your answer but if you experiment you will surely figure it out. It isn't rocket science. Every soil is different so every soil take different amounts of wax to be right.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I mix 2 1/2 cups of flake wax to 1 gallon of dirt. The instructions say 3 cups to 1 gallon. I think that depends on soil type. I have never tries weighing it to see the ratio

Rick, Do you find that waxed sand mix allows the trap to fire at any the extreme cold temps you experience ?

Both of the sand/dirt and the loamy black dirt works well, our temps run from 60 to -40 during trapping season most common temps are 20 to -20 during our fur season.

Rick do you have avoidance issues with sand? Some coyotes here don’t seem to be to eager to step on it. It is a lot lighter colored than the soil here. I normally put a little peat on top but than can cause freeze problems.

Just sift a very, very thin layer of native dirt over the sand.

I've run some tests using paraffin wax and soy wax. Paraffin wax looks more like half beads while soy wax looks like flakes. Soy wax in my opinion is far superior as far as over all performance, amount needed and lower melt point and price.

With that said, soy wax dirt has a very noticeable odor that reminds me of vanilla. I never ended up using soy wax as I figured coyotes would zero right in on it.
