Bought a jar back during the Fall and just opened it and it’s congealed and doesn’t smell like I remember it should. Thought it used to have a slight skunk smell to it. Will colder weather do that to it?

Odd lure for me. Some years yotes can’t walk past it other years limited response.

If it's fox hollow one. I have taken many bobcats with it. I also use it on coyote sets too.

You might just be getting used to the smell of skunk. People walk into my shop and are about blown over by the smell of skunk, yet I can't smell it. (No I don't have or have had Covid.)

This is just my opinion but when I first started trapping I bought several lures and GH-II was one of them and I caught a good many coyotes on it. So last year I purchased some more and it just doesn’t seem to smell the same to me that I can remember. And haven’t caught coyotes like before either.

I would be interested in comparing it to the GH3 that Bruce sells

Ok, how is the consistency of it? Mine is congealed if that makes since. It has NO skunk smell to it. I have another lure with a skunk smell and I can smell it. I bought it a couple of years ago and I remember it being thick and runny, with a skunk smell. I caught coyotes on it.
I decided to go with it this year after skipping a year and it’s not the same, not even close.
My question would be could heat or cold cause it to congeal up and lose its “flavor”? None of my other lures/baits have done this and they’re all stored together. I’d hate to order another jar if this is the “new normal” of that particular lure. I just remember it worked.

I didn't have any issues with my jar of GHII like you describe....mine is skunky no doubt

I use both Slims GH3 from Bruce and Fox Hollows GH2. The GH2 is louder on the skunk. You can definitely tell the GH3 has skunk in it though, but more subdued. Both are good lures for me.

I’ve used GHII a bit over the years and still have a few jars. The skunk disappears from it, like any lure, over time. The “congealed” observation is normal for that lure. It’s almost a paste.

Just bought this in Oct or Nov. Just pulled the tape off the cap a couple of days ago. Paste I’d be happy with, this is almost like gelatin...moist and crumbly.

On a good day you can still smell it in my carpet from where I dropped the lid a couple of years ago.

All the GH2 Ive used (and the first time was more than a decade or 2 ago when Bob Young made it) has always been mildly skunky. The MTP version is not as liquidy as Bob's mix.....but smelled the same. You can fix that with glycerin and add a drop of essesnce too. I know: you shouldnt have to do that with a commercial lure, but it is what it is.

GH2 and GH3 have always been totally different odors. I have not used Bruce's GH3 version, I still have some of Jerry Lee's version.

Jerry's GH3 has always been productive down here. Ive favored it over GH2.

I was always told that the GH stood for the groundhog base. Not sure.

Its been a few years since I purchased any GH2. when I first started trapping I had good success with it compared to other lures I was using. I will say it's getting harder and more costly to purchase some of the better ingredients these day and I would suspect some lure makers are having to cut back on the real thing or use man made synthetics or both in the name of profit. Ive bought enough lure ingredients from enough different suppliers to realize some hold a little bit more to the profit side than the quality side. If they will cut an ingredient to add to the bottom line it would be even easier to fudge a little bit on a formulation.

Don't think that's quite right. I've used it in the past. It's a paste and has some skunk smell to it but will lose skunk smell over time after being used.

If bought from a reputable company I would call and see what they think. Might even replace it for you.

I sent MTS an email. I wanted to find the exact date I ordered but can only see orders for 2021. They are my main supplier for most everything trapping related.

I’ve never used Jerry’s version of GH3, only Bruce’s, but I sure wish I had some more of Jerry’s Black Magic! That stuff was a sure bet for me. I bought some from the new maker and can’t catch a coyote on it to save my soul.

Black Magic has caught well down here too. I have about 8 oz of Jerry's left.

You can still get BM from Grandpa's Trading Post in Greenville, FL. Bill Crowder owns and makes it. It is identical to when Jerry made it. He has a website.

I had good luck with GHII on coyotes and wolves, what I have now is a few years old and almost gone. Very thick, I could see calling it gelatinous and crumbly. Seems like it used to have a mild skunk odor but very noticeable. Still has a mild skunk odor but I don't think as strong as it used to be. Hard to say for sure from memory though.
