Its been a tough road figuring out coyote trapping. I put what I have learned from this sight and from trial and error to the test. I knew I was getting closer, I went from dug up traps to misfires to toes to finally a solid catch. Its the first but hopefully I figured some things out. I have a notebook of my lessons learned.
I caught this male yesterday.

Good job! I still remember my first coyote. I was trying for a fox and caught it in a 1 1/2 coilspring. I know that sounds impossible as you can't hold a coyote in a 1 1/2. LOL To top it off, it was staked with a single 18" rebar stake.

That’s a toss up. I think it’s a tie between proper bedding and proper pan tension.
At first I had a trap dug up, I learned because it wasn’t bedded properly. I learned how to bed the trap firmly. Lots of practice in my garden.
After I was getting proper bedding, I started catching toes or misses. I believe it was a result of pan creep. So I learned how to file in a night latch. I did some experimenting with night latching and filing the dog and notch to reduce/eliminate the pan creep. I like the night latch because of the audible but function wise, I don’t see much difference. I also saw the importance of setting pan tension, I like 3lb.
One more, I think scent control is very high up there, no need to go to trap sight when you can stay far away and look with binoculars
Sorry to be so long winded. I am still on cloud nine.

Should of quit while you could. Lol
Good job. My first one i had one trap set behind the house for like a month. Went to pull it , was tired of driving out there everyday to check it, and there was a female coyote in it. Had to go back to house to get a gun and the boys. They had given up going to check it with me after about 2 weeks. Looking back the set was terrible and I'm not sure why I caught her.
