These were modified for a different purpose but principle is the same. First - crisp up the "dog" with a file. The factory edges are pretty rounded. Take a few strokes on the under (jaw contact) side of the pan to remove the burr as well. Keep the file flat against the underside of the pan while doing this. Then - take a few strokes on the jaw to make a crisp surface for the dog to engage. The trap pictured has a lug welded lower on the inside of the jaw to lower the pan. Finally - adjust the pan to make sure it's flat. You can do this once it's set by tapping the very edge of the pan with a hammer. Tap it towards the jaw to lower pan and tap away from jaw to raise. Keep your feet on the levers while doing this so it doesn't fire if you tap too far.
