I tie Bucktails for Musky fishing and that’s the extent of my current Fly-Tying skills, I use a hobby vise for clamping the trebles and it works fine for that application. I would like to tie some marabou jigs, poppers and streamers, etc. Looked online for fly tying vises and they range from $14 - $400.
What have you used and what should I look for in a good vise?

I like a vise with a pedestal that doesn’t need to clamp on the table. I worried it might not be secure enough, but it works fine and I can use it wherever I want. I have a Renzetti traveler.

I have 3 good low-end vises to recommend. The first would be a Thompson "A". Next would be a Thompson "Pro", and the third would be a Griffin 1A. All of them are easy to use, and you should be able to find any of them for less than $50 or so. If you have questions about the thread and materials you will need.

I use a simple Thompson model A with a base. It works fine for me. I tie, a wet fly size 12 to a diving hair bug and popper size 2. They have a lot of them out there. Some spin , so you can work on the bottom of the fly. Renzetti or really nice! And or top notch!

Peak makes a great rotary with a base, the jaws are bullet proof and it's not priced bad for a rotary vise.

Also tied 1,000's with the $2 vise that came with my beginning Herters kit. I finally did swap screw to table base for a solid board base. Still have it but my family upgraded my one xmas and adjust height and rotating head are VERY nice. A quality vise mostly speeds tying IMO(or very tiny flies).

I tie a large variety of flies for myself and for when I guide, and I love my Atlas Anvil. It is a reasonably priced rotary vise (think I found it on sale for $140 about 5 years ago) and has held up very well to the abuse I have sent its way. Two thumbs up for the price and I would (and will) buy another one when I need it.

I prefer one with a pedestal base too, but with the volume and types of flies I tie, I need the rotary function, even though many get by without it.

For proper muskie Flys your going to want something like a Dyna King.

When you crank on Kevlar thread to spin deer hair, nothing on the dyna king will give.

Your gonna end up there eventually, might as well start there.
