Hello everyone, this is my first year trapping and I am trying to catch coyotes but haven’t had any luck. I’m from southern Utah and I was wondering what you guys look for to find coyotes in a new area and where to make your sets. I would appreciate any advice or help, thank you.

Welcome to the site Beavertail. I look for pinch points between pastures. If you have farms nearby look around there were there's sheep and cows there's yotes. Follow the tracks as well to learn from them.

What type of land are you trapping in Bevertail33? Farm land, woods, pasture, prairie etc? As Northern Trapper stated, following the tracks will tell you a lot. Coyotes will revisit areas they traveled before so if you see sign (tracks, scat etc) they will likely be there again. When I get a new property to trap, I look for areas where the animals are funneled to start. Could be a crop edge, a bridge over a creek, a passage way between fields, etc. Coyotes like to hunt where there is tall grass, young tree growth, brushy areas etc as that's where their prey lives. Intersections of roads, whether is the woods or on farms, is a standby as coyotes travel these roads and setting up intersections stacks some odds in your favor, though certainly not the only place to look to put your sets. Could be a trail intersecting with something else too ( a road, another game or livestock trail, a log across a creek etc). Get out and explore, put some sets where you see coyote sign, and after awhile picking locations will begin to become second nature.

I trap in high desert areas with a lot of jackrabbits which have been pretty common to show up in my coyote sets, the vegetation is a lot of sagebrush and grass and a lot of rocky areas. Lots of agricultural fields surround the public land I trap too.

Search dry washes for tracks. Look hard at the point where washes intersect. Like said above, books are great.

Id start by looking for tracks/scat on the two-track roads. Unless public land with a lot of traffic the road intersections are best locations. If public land you're gonna have to get off the roads or your traps will be stolen.
