I used wax dirt and it did a pretty good job keeping the traps functional. On a couple of sets I did use some trap antifreeze flakes mixed in with some dry dirt from an anthill nearby because I ran out of wax dirt. I never did have any issues with the traps freezing in. They were all meticulously bedded and solid. Although that may have been the only thing I did right.

It did seem like SniperB mentioned that by the time I set up on tracks they were only going through one direction and I wasn't getting in front of them. My other big mistake probably being my failure to be patient.

When it does snow say 6 inches is it necessary to clear the trap of snow or just leave it be?

That depends on a few different things. Is it a dry fluffy snow or a wet snow?A wet snow will freeze solid when temps get below 32.Is it a 1 3/4 or a #4 size trap? Are snares legal?

So basically if it's wet and going to prevent the trap from functioning obviously clear the snow, but if it's say a couple inches of dry snow there is no reason to clear it. I've been using all MB550s. Cable restraints are legal and I did have those set out as well.

One factor could be redoing the bait and lure to often. Make the set and leave it alone. I've seen coyotes work a set that was a couple of months old. I made a set a couple of years ago on November 1 and caught a coyote on New Year Day. I had to drive by it every day on my way to work. I used to do the same as you. I had a lure maker tell me I was a maker's best customer.
