If a skunk is caught in a dirt hole set intended for fox, will that set be productive after the skunk or is it toast for a while?

This set caught 5 skunks, 4 red fox and one bobcat. Dirt hole started at 1.5 inches and ended at 9 inches

Doesn't matter if the skunk sprayed after it was shot?

Makes it even better. I just add a brand new scent in the bait hole each time to zero them in where I want them. Fox may smell a little but not bad. After catching a skunk most days there was a fox in the set the next day

Suggest you learn how to dispatch them w/o using a gun. No smell and you can collect the quill. PM me for details if you like. Like MNEric says even if they do spray, it' only increase your chances.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

They put “skunk” in call lure...it can only make it better.

Yeah I know but that's always seemed counterintuitive to me. Stinky spray doesn't seem like much of a defense mechanism if it actually attracts the very animals that will prey on a skunk.

I've always heard great things for catching foxes on skunk remakes but I have not had the same luck with coyotes. I've had better luck catching them on a new set about 10 yard away from the skunk spot.

I have only caught one skunk (thank you Jesus) but I pulled the trap and attempted to get the skunk scent off to no avail. I decided the heck with it and placed the trap at a new location. That trap produced a coyote, a fox, then another coyote at the new spot. I can still pick that trap out just by smell alone! It’s no where near as bad as it was, but it still has a skunk hint to it. I realize that goes against all trapping logic of keeping sets and traps scent free, but it’s still producing.

It kinda sucks catching a skunk in a fox trap. But whenever I caught one I couldn’t wait to check the trap the next few days. Always seems to bring the fox in.

In my experience, empty skunk pods down a dirt hole or a buried road kill skunk with a wobble hole with a trap in front of it are deadly on coyotes. And if you can put that trap on a drag, either of those sets can be good for multiple catches. I have one such set that has taken 7 coyotes this season.

I love catching a red fox because I know in the next 3-4 days I’ll catch a coyote. With skunk it’s almost just as good. I’ll throw out another set or two near by in hopes of a double.

I'm going to wash the skunk before I skin it. Does anyone know if sodium carbonate (soda wash) works instead of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with hydrogen peroxide?

Probably not as well, but it will still work. Use a bit more to be sure.

I dunno, I was thinking you might need less. Soda wash has a much higher ph than baking soda, so much that it can irritate your skin if you don’t wear gloves. Maybe it would harm the fur/pelt?

I would not let the pelt sit for any length of time in any solution. Washing soda is not so alkaline that it’ll make a difference, especially after a good rinse.

The biggest problem is that soda is harder to dissolve.

Yeah, I realized that and just used baking soda. Turned out well, and I don't even have to sleep on the couch tonight! wink

Is it worth saving the glands for anything? I don't trap enough to get into making my own lure, but I saved the glands in case they might have some other value.

Wonderful! Those glands are spectacular bait. Drop one down a dirt hole and you are good to go! You can chunk up the skunk and use the pieces in a similar manner as well. Good luck.
