Cages and just about anything for bait..and you can easily educate and release non-possums if in say a barn or farmyard area.

One season we caught 29, and 19 of those came from a small one-farm quarter section. They just kept coming and coming.
We used fish, coyote bait and coon baits, marshmallows, fruit loops, candles, grains with molasses, they liked everything we threw at the coona and coyotes that year. We had to thin out possums first and it wasn't easy. They breed like rabbits and have big litters of cover and food are plentiful. Too bad they weren't worth any money.
In 80s and 90s I used to finish every one of em and got more for those than i did muskrats.
After that cant even give them away these days.
In DPs I had best luck with fish and fish oil. But also caught a lot of coon and skunks in DPs with that combo too.
Went to cages so we could at least release easily what we didn't want to keep.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

canned fish like jack mackrel, no additives, let it set a day or two open before putting it in the traps possums will out run any other critter to get it. Terrible choice for coon for that very reason.

Wow! Interesting post. I’ve never targeted them yet took 15 off my last property. They seem to like cat food, any K9 gland lure, any bait including natural baits, etc...they are basically a land dwelling buzzard. I don’t know what they won’t eat or are attracted to.

For the smell it taints fast and gets a rotten smell in a just a couple days, possums love it! Just open the can and pour it into a bigger plastic container and let it out in 60 degrees weather a couple days. It can be covered.

I recently caught a possum unintentionally in a DP that was set for raccoons with dry dog food kibbles up to the trigger and a marshmallow on top, and some raccoon lure on the outside of the can. I suspect it was the dog food more than the marshmallow he was after as I sprinkled a few kibbles around the trap. I also caught a possum this year in a urine post set that had no bait, just Hawbakers Reddy Red for the urine.

Cat food lightly coated with fish oil. Caught 100s on this. Will catch coon, Fox, cats as well.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.
