Been having a heck of a time with this squirrel. There are multiple holes on the house so I have been closing them and moving traps for about two and a half weeks. It has avoided baited cages, baited tubes, and multi catch traps set up over the hole at night. I even closed a hole and it chewed a new one next to it despite having other openings.

Finally got all the holes closed except two. A tube trap over one with no bait and the RBG over the other. Connected with the RBG today. Those traps are one of my favorite setups, but are typically a last resort due to some homeowners’ requests.


Forgot to mention the home has no attic access..

RBG is round body grip, just in case you hadn’t heard them called that before.

I adopted this idea from someone and have worked on improving it. I use them in a couple different ways. Most of the time it is directly over the entry point. I like them as an unbaited option over the multi catch traps because it can be set any time of day and it doesn’t lock the squirrels out like the multi catch trap does. I find most of success with the Multi catch traps is when they are setup at night or very early - basically, at a time of day where the squirrel is definitely in the den. Versus setting the body grip over the hole allowing the squirrel to get caught coming or going.


I use a wire “tube” to make it a one way path for the squirrel. I recently started using a 4” pvc coupler. It has to be the coupler or the bell end of the pipe because the regular pipe section is too small to fit the trap in it.

I even made a special piece with both ends open that can be baited through a lid and a trap placed on each end.

I drill holes in the coupler to slide bolts or wire through the jaws of the trap to stabilize it. The bendy wire ties work well also.

I see the Superior Construction trailer in the background of one of your pics. They were the last company I worked for before going out on my own. I didn't realize they were down in TN.

I like the round conis. I haven't used PVC to guide them in though. I've usually used scrap flashing that is always laying around my truck. Ill have to pick some up!

Looks like we will have something in common then haha. I came to Superior from Walsh when my old Project Manager (worked for him at Walsh and he went to Superior) offered me a spot in Nashville. Superior is relatively new to the Nashville area. We are on our third project here. This one is at the airport and will be about 4-5 years long. I don't think I will see the end of it. I am a project engineer for them, but being non union I get to do a good bit of the field stuff as well when we are self performing.







I always take the trap in with me when I go to get more to make sure it fits. With the different schedules and types you never know if the dimensions are going to be the same.



I cut this one with a wedge on it to fit in the corner.









I have a friend that does a similar setup for mink trapping. I believe he used 6" pipe so he didn't need the coupler section. Get a piece of pipe a couple feet long, add the coupler if needed, and stick it in the bank. Mink love checking out every ditch pipe/tile

I would get kicked out of every HOA that I ever work in for having squirrels hang like that. You can do the same thing with Colony traps.

I don't doubt that. The trap has its time and place. Customers are informed of what is going to happen also. Takes about 2 minutes of talking to the customer to know if they are going to care about what happens to the squirrels.

Good part about the pvc with the bolts is that the trap doesn't fall out like when using the wire tubes.


I like using colony traps also. Had a colony trap over that hole and one of the others for 2 weeks before I took it down and replaced it.

Nice pictures. I have 1 of those little RBG's. Your method of setting them is awesome. Stabilizing them can be tricky.

What size RBG's the #40 or #55 are being shown in your photo's?

I’m guessing #40. I think they are 3.5” diameter.

Can't remember the last time I used a body grip trap for squirrels. Cages or colony is all we do here. Like Vinke many areas would be very resistant to hanging animals on our jobs.

I definitely use it sparingly and only in the right situations. Specifically, when the customer wants them to die or if it is a rental property and the tenants have no say and can't see the traps, I will use RBGs and Tubes. When I was in Ohio we didn't release animals so we used it a lot. In TN it is allowed to relocate animals and everyone wants it.

I mainly use cages and colonies, but what I like about the RBGs is that the squirrels can still get caught entering the hole if they aren't inside when you set it up. Also, using the PVC method the squirrels don't hang because the trap can't fall out.

I think the T trap with double RBG is a great solution.


I have mixed on the whole releasing part of nuisance wildlife, but I guess this isn’t the time.


I think RBGs definitely have a place in nuisance work.

I'm not a huge fan of it myself. Squirrels I don't mind, but other things like raccoons and larger, no thanks.

Thats a interesting setup, not to derail, but I have tried with great persistence this year to do what you did just in the wild. I am not sure if the fox squirrels we have here are too large for the #55, but they are not real keen on sticking their head through that. Nice to see!
