I picked this trap up at a pawn shop a few years ago. One jaw had been broken and welded back together, it is also missing half the chain. This is one I want to keep and display and would like to have it repaired. Who does that kind of work?

The cheapest way to fix it is buy another 4 with teeth or 14 Newhouse off of eBay, nationals, swap or someone here. Try to confirm the gap in the jaws are the same. Some older fours with teeth have more gap, some a lot more. Look for a beater of a trap with good jaws and posts also look for one with a complete chain. Try to match patinas.
Expect to pay at least 50$ maybe even double that.

Getting a good welder to fix is not a perfect solution. Any good welder not a friend with charge you as much as the parts trap and you will forever have a shiny spot on your jaw where he had to weld all the way around. Current can go through the whole trap and possibly make the springs weaker. Plus if the trap is ever snapped you now have a week spot to rebreak.

You could try to just replace the chain and one jaw but it’s hard to get the rivets to match.

I would advise you do the work yourself as if you have to send it away and bring it back the shipping alone will cost a bunch.

Good luck if you find your parts and need help figuring out how to fix you can message me.

Thanks lots of mink, the repair weld was a glob almost as thick as the jaw itself. I knew that I would keep the trap so I cleaned the weld up and ,as you said, now have a shiny spot, but I knew I would and it looks better than the glob.

I have a complete chain, just don't know if I have the guts to put a wrench on the jaw post nuts. I have quite a few later #4 beaters, so maybe I will practice on them.

The casting marks are on the inside of the jaws, the top of the jaw posts are square, and the springs stamps are 3 lines - S Newhouse/Oneida Community/NY

According to what I have found, this trap was made between 1882 and 1895, does that sound right?

Opps, sorry, I meant to start a new thread.
4 1/2 Newhouse value.
This isn't an old Newhouse, it's quite rusty, has all of original chai. And snap but is missing original grapple.
Any idea of value?

ttzt, If you are happy with the clean up job you did on the jaw, you can put some patina back on the shiny spot with Burchwood Casey, Plum Brown. It is like bluing for a gun but it is brown and will help cover the shiny spot. You can find it online or at a sporting goods shop, fallow the directions on the bottle.

Yes, 1882 is about when the cut link, American chain was started.

Thanks Snakecollector, I think I will try that. The jaw isn't perfect, but I would rather keep the original if I can blend in the shiny spot.

Right on, that’s an easy fix.

Waggler if you can find a tourist shop they might let you consign that trap in their store. To a tourist 3-400$, to another trapper 100-150$

ttzt,

Before you try to take the nut off your # 4 to replace the spring take your time and using Deep Creep or WD 40 and soak the post and nut for a week before trying to remove the post nut, to replace the chain.
