So if and when autonomous driving becomes a reality.

Will the law ever be able to nail you for drunk driving?
May sound dumb, but how could a conviction ever hold up in court.
Think about it....

You'd still be "operating" the vehicle?

And, there will be new laws put on the books faster than greased lightning!

Yes I thought about that too hippie. I guess it is going to depend on how autonomous it is.
They are saying that there will be electric cars with autonomous capabilities that will replace the current taxi or Uber system. I would think you would be just getting in, type in a destination, swipe your credit card and sit back?

So what happens when it senses a grey squirrel running across the road??
I see a lot of rear end collisions when brakes are getting slammed on out of nowhere??

Will an autonomous car have to be 21 yrs old to go get me a 30 pack of Busch Light from the licker store? Curbside pickup, of course.

wont the gps/road technology need to be 100% first?

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I'd like to see autonomous cars navigate Interstate 4 between Orlando and Tampa at 5:30 Saturday evening.

That is a scary stretch of road at that hour. Especially considering 85%+ of the drivers are tourists. I was traveling that one day and watched a car in the extreme left lane cut across 6 lanes in heavy traffic to make their exit. This was the section in Kissimmee.

The technology isn't there yet, but will be eventually. Computers aren't perfect, but computers don't get tired, they don't get distracted, they don't drive drunk, they don't miss road signs, etc etc etc. Once cars can talk to each other, computers won't have to wonder what other drivers are doing. Cars being able to talk to each other is the key to it all working, and that's why autonomous cars won't be a thing for a long time.
