Why does scientists call 90 to 95 percent of the dna in our body junk dna when i beleive it plays a big role in the reason some people have extroardinary capabilitys like einstein did and i beleive its the key to so many discoveries to be made

This book has some great info on our make up.
Basically we're water balloons filled with bacteria. There is more bacterial DNA than human in our bodies. Etc.

Not related to Ethan's question directly, but I just saw an article where a very old murder was solved by getting DNA from a Pepsi can. I'm thinking it was 40 years old and they were still able to identify the person. Amazing.

Coke can, sorry. On top that, they traced through his family.

My understanding is that there is a lot of inactivated parts to DNA, a while back I watched a show where they showed research where scientists had managed to activate inactive DNA in chickens causing all kinds of traits that had evolved out such as having teeth or a long tail like those dinosaurs that had feathers

The show was about bringing back extinct species not by cloning but by activating inactive DNA in current related species to bring them back into existence

According to the scientists doing the research everything that a species has evolved past is still blueprinted in their DNA but is inactive but can be turned on though it’s still hit or miss, because frankly they just don’t know what it does till they manage to activate it and there is literally tens of thousands of inactive traits if not more present in a single strand of DNA

The part of genetics that is hard for me to fathom is how siblings with the same parents can trace back distinct ancestral DNA contributions. IE: I have a tiny amount of Cree/Ojibwe DNA markers show up and my sister tested by the same company shows none, but does show a tiny bit of Egyptian or some darn thing which I don't have markers for.

I guess those things account why brothers and sister have differences. Of the six of us three have balding tendencies and three have none whatsoever. And there are other differences.

I think junk DNA refers to all the DNA shared by a species.

Let's break it down this way. You share DNA with all other humans on the planet. But what separates you from me is about 5-10% of our DNA. All the rest is technically junk, or shared. You may be Native American, and I may be eastern European. There is a lot we have in common genetically, but there's a small portion that differentiates us from each other.

Think of it like duck hunting. Most hardcore Arkansas/Mississippi guys call anything other than a mallard a trash duck...as in shoot your limit of drake Mallards, then fill the rest of the limit with trash ducks. They aren’t trash ducks in the real terms, just called that because they aren’t Mallards.

We had a day only shovelers were coming in and no one would shoot. After the third flock I said the heck with it. Ended up getting my six “green heads” out the next three flocks, lol. Before it was over and after only two Mallards that showed up, everyone else was getting in the “trash” ducks!! I had come to shoot ducks, not watch them fly around. Those shovelers ate as good as the Mallards.

I think the % of difference is far less than 5-10%. Don't we share 99% of our DNA with chimps?

We use the dna we get from chimps to make us who we are and why we look the way we look

Only...we didn't get our DNA from chimps. We got it from ancient primates that were both ancestral to us and to chimps.

The "junk" DNA builds up through various different processes. Sometimes mistakes are made in the DNA replication process and a single gene gets copied twice- but the body doesn't have a use for the second copy and it mutates from a useful chunk of DNA into "junk." Generation after generation of replication can build up these sections of unusable DNA.

Researchers are able to use a lot of these "junk" regions to make really interesting findings about the DNA that is useful to us, however.

Interestingly enough, not all species are mostly junk. Less complicated organisms like bacteria and yeast are more "efficient"

As for the Arkansas comments... wish I could disagree!
