i trapped quite a bit in the 80's and 90's and only heard a couple coyote's that were vocal while in a trap. (barks) only remember one that howled..
trapped this last fall and seemed like about 25% or more were very vocal barks and howls. wonder what changed? anybody else have the same experience?

I get more barking, challenges, and howls at me from males than females.
I'd say about half of my catches are vocal and its been about like thst in my 40+ years of trapping.

Some are some aren’t. Haven’t noticed an increase. I trapped an area back in 2015 and while I would be checking, making a set or resetting in the middle of the day a coyote about 100yds away would start barking/challenging me. I caught a couple of coyotes there but that one would always start barking while I was in the area. I had forgotten about it when I went back to that area this year and sure enough while I was taking a coyote out of a trap about 100yds away one started barking at me. I presume the same coyote that I heard back in 2015. This is the only place this has ever happened to me so I thought it was unusual behavior.

This fall I trapped further north than I usually do and notice the northern coyotes weren't nearly as vocal as the ones closer to home. My theory is if a coyote is held in a trap in an area with wolves, they will usually remain quiet so as to not advertise their predicament. But then that's just a theory and I don't have anything to back it up. I'm sure there are areas where the coyotes are not as vocal and there is no wolves around.

Many vocal here. I notice it more with adult females more than anything. I don’t like it and hit the mute button as soon as possible.

Very few females I trap are aggressive or vocal, most the mature males will bark a little bit, and might be aggressive.

don't really have much for wolves here.. i have never seen one but have heard a of a few caught.

I am thinking the vocal response of trapped coyotes is about the same as when I started 35 years ago. It seems to me it has always been the old females that sound off the most. I have figured they were sounding the alarm to the others.

I can’t even get a good pose on my coyotes, much less be vocal. Mine just lay there like they’ve already given up. Sorta glad they aren’t a ferocious as greys act, lol.

I have always thought it was a sign of dominace. In other words, the vocal ones were not used to be inconvenienced and stood over...even by a human. They are the ones that always done the inconveniencing and standing over the subordinates.

Its been about 50-50 males and females here that barked/growled/high-pitched howled agressively at me as I approached. They seemed to not want to submit at all.

To put a % on how many have done this over the years...id say about 25%. Caught my 1st coyote in 1982. Ive experienced this since the beginning.

I have had several yotes start barking and howling when I pull into the fields. I can gear them while I get my stuff ready. Those are rare but you see it every year. I’m had it in my head one year that the longer I let them bark the catch really slowed at that location. Jury is still out on that one but one thing is for sure nothing can be gained by letting them vocalize. I shut those up quick. Just my opinion.
