Coonman, if your truck is still running, jump on U.S. 20 and drive over to Freeport. Then take a left on IL 26 and stop in at Groenys in Forreston and he will probably give you a tour.

If you coordinate it well, you may be able to get in on the local Euchre tournament. Watch out for the old lady with the bum hand she's mean.

Not sure how zip tieing any fur would work much less a coon as I've never handled one. I've never heard of using zip ties though.

When you meet up with GFW to sell in a few days, ask them if they can film your turn to sell and put it on YouTube. I think that would be interesting to watch.

Coonman, GFW has a couple fleshing machines. They are basically the same type machines used to flesh cow hides. They work on open skinned items. That is why GFW open skins the carcass raccoon and opens the green skinned raccoons. The machines have two rollers, one is a drive roller and the other is a cutter with spiral blades similar to old reel type lawn mowers. The space between the rollers is adjustable to control the depth of cut and the thickness of the finished product. They open the gap and put a pelt half way in the rollers, close the gap to the preset depth and feed the pelt out. Then they open the gap, reverse the pelt, close the gap and feed the pelt out. In about 30 seconds, an open skinned beaver or raccoon are fleshed and ready to stretch and dry.

Their stretching and drying operations are just as efficient. Probably less than a minute to stretch a beaver pelt or a raccoon pelt. The fleshings are funneled into an auger that feeds them into a container. They are handling thousands of pelts and have to be efficient.

They had an Open House when the NTA was in Pecatonica IL a few years ago and those of us that went got a tour of the facility. It was at night and and not actually operating but we saw the machines and they explained their process. It was well worth the time spent in my opinion.

Drying time is far more dependent on humidity that temps. Keep a humidistat in your fur drying room and plan accordingly. We are seeing above freezing temps up here now so I'm running my dehumidifier in the fur shack as the humidity is climbing with the melting going on. Fur dries pretty fast in February when it's below zero and super low humidity. Now, not so fast.

Coonman Take your fleshing knife and look at the dull side of It. If the edges are not squared off just take a file and square up that edge. It will sharpen up that edge but not enough to cut the pelt. Then you should be able to deal with those fat spots while the pelt Is still on the beam.

Stretching is manual but the process is streamlined and done quickly. No nailing or stapling involved with beaver or raccoon.

If you make it to the NTA or FTA conventions this year, look me up at the NC Trappers Assoc. booth and I will explain it to you.

All that extra work and costs of cutting fleshing, stretching, drying, and all the extra handling involved in that and disposing of and costs of and work involved in hazardous waste(fleshings)from thousands of green skins?
And those selling dried dont get any more money for their product???
What a rip-off.

2 beaver look good, the other by Friday we'll have a few white spots in tail an dump area but have be good enough, they disappear in 10 days, I believe we're flesh well, I doubt groenwolds auto flesh does a better job, I didn't cut a 1 hole in beaver pelts flesh this season with knecker,I use sharp edge a lot an run over dump number times, u can't get every speck fat off

That area near the tail end Is gristle not fat and It needs to be fleshed right down to the hide.
