URGENT!!!
The fate of trapping on public lands may be decided by the action of the US Senate.
Rep. Deb Haaland of New Mexico has been nominated by the President to be the next Secretary of the Interior. She has expressed anti-trapping views and supports the ban of trapping on public lands in her home state. If confirmed by the Senate, she would have control over federal public land in the US.
Confirmation hearings begin with testimony next week. Please contact your Senator before then and express your opposition to this individual. The stakes have never been higher. Please act now! Action needed before Feb 22nd.

Contact Senator Dan Sullivan: https://www.sullivan.senate.gov/contact/email
Contact Senator Lisa Murkowski: https://www.murkowski.senate.gov/contact

my 2 cents

Please oppose Rep Deb Haaland of New Mexico for Secretary of the Interior. Rep Haaland is opposed to trapping and supports a trapping ban on public lands in New Mexico. Obviously trapping is an important activity to many Alaskans, rural and otherwise. Most trapping in Alaska occurs on public lands, much of it under the purview of DOI. Title VIII of ANILCA notwithstanding, Alaska will not be well served by Deb Haaland.

In the 'old days' it was possible for any senator to put an indefinite 'hold' on any nominee. Has that been changed ?

Sullivan might do it.

Hard times very hard times. Hard to believe how vulnerable we are at the hands of these Democrats liberals. Sullivan is getting ripped to shreds for this vote. Buckle up it's going to be a rough ride.

I was also able to get a firm commitment from her to meet personally with a wide variety of Alaskans from many different backgrounds, including the following groups:

People of King Cove and the North Slope Borough
Mining community
Oil and gas workers and North Slope contractors
Hunters, trappers, and angling community, and State of Alaska fish and game managers

Alaska Native leaders, including tribal leaders, the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN), regional and village corporations.
Alaska veterans
The purpose of these meetings will generally be the same: to let Congresswoman Haaland hear directly from hundreds of Alaskans that the decisions she ends up making about our state—for example, on the Willow project in the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska—will directly impact the lives of thousands of Alaskans, either positively or negatively.

The only place I can hope for an acceptable outcome is if those meetings are in a federal courtroom.

There may well be a problem between herself and many Alaskans, not only over use of land issues , but also if they find out she is only half native. The other half is European. I think Norwegian.

She is identified as " native" , so she would be in vogue with current trend voting.

I don't think Alaskans will be impressed on the attempted race card with no knowledge of the land and the best ways to use it in behalf of all Alaskans.

With all due respect, I'm a lot less interested, much less concerned, in her pedigree than I am her stated opposition to oil development and trapping on federal land!

It's shaping up to be a L O N G next 4 years...

Of course Pete, me too. Pedigree never has meant anything to me either, but education and in best interest for the people and the Constitution is.

I mentioned pedigree only because THAT is what has been "in vogue" by those whose sight is only valued by calling the "race card." I was being a bit like you....tongue in cheek sarcasm in humor wink

And those voted in by the left are precisely the ones who do oppose oil development and trapping on fed. land. And like here, many Alaskans will no doubt not be impressed with her policies and attempted appeal to them simply by claiming only the half of her that could possibly sway others to go along with her views.

Unfortunately, that DOES affect an amount of people's views as of late , instead of education and discernment in using Fed. land in all the ways we are concerned .

To be forewarned in the nuances of control is to have insight and dig beneath the surface , to me.

When Senator Sullivan interviewed nominee Haagland was she under oath? of course not! If the director of the FBI can't tell the truth as well as Biden what makes us think the new Interior Secretary will?

Yes talk is cheap!

But then again perhaps Haaland is an honorable person but how would we know? I don't recall hearing anything about the content of her character, just the color of her skin!

And with a great deal of ceremony she will limit the private use of public lands to preserve it for future generations. She'll probably do it with tears gently rolling down a cheek. What BS.

A question or two. By banning trapping which is the best tool for predator control are they managing the states wildlife? What is the federal interest that allows this?

I trap on park service managed lands and during the obama years they were down right horrible to deal with but over the past few years they toned down a little, I suspect they will be goose stepping all over me again. I hope everyone is donating to the ATA defense fund because I can see the many battles we will have to fight ahead.

Competing legislation in Alaska. Most fed. land falls under ANILCA, so subsistence uses supposedly protected. Doesn't mean fed employees won't make things hard.
I have atrapping cabin permit in the Nowitna refuge. So far no real problems but am concerned for the next 4 years. Refuge doesn't have a permanent manager so if that position is filled could be good or bad.

"As a part of the National Park System, each preserve must be “administered in accordance with the provisions of any statute made specifically applicable to that area.” General Authorities Act of 1970, Public Law 91-383, Sec. 2(b), 84 Stat. 826. ANILCA specifically provides that “the taking of fish and wildlife for sport purposes and subsistence uses, and trapping shall be allowed in a national preserve under applicable State and Federal law and regulation[.]”"

" The Alaska Statehood Act of 1958 provided for the transfer of “the administration and management of the fish and wildlife resources of Alaska” from the Federal Government to the State of Alaska. "

"This specific Federal-State relationship was also confirmed in ANILCA, in which Congress established and set aside national preserves in Alaska as NPS-administered units where sport hunting and trapping shall continue being managed by the State of Alaska, except that the “Secretary may designate zones where and periods when no hunting, fishing, trapping, or entry may be permitted for reasons of public safety, administration, floral and faunal protection, or public use and enjoyment.”"
