I started attaching my traps to rebar in a unique way this year. I do it this way so I can cut the trap off the stake and clean/move the trap as snow piles up. Maybe lots of you already know about this, maybe not. I take a washer and drill a hole in it and file it down. Then I run some snare cable through it and double ferrel it and run the other end of the cable through the last swivel and single ferrel it. It allows the trap to swivel perfectly on the rebar and using the last swivel as well. Last year I put the rebar through the last swivel and I had some traps I could not get out until summer. Dealing with the frozen ground that I have I can not pull rebar until summer. I use about 6 inches of snare cable because I like to cut and reuse a few times, if you are bedding the chain right under your trap you could use alot less. I have lots of snow to bed my traps in so length of snare cable does not affect the way i bed my traps.

good idea but wouldnt it be easier to make a loop on the end of the cable and attach that to the swivel with a j hook. then you wouldnt have to cut the cable. kinda the same idea as a cable stake

Could be but this is much faster for me, and I don't have to take my gloves off to do any of it in cold temps. I have more time to mess with the traps at home where it is warm than out on the line. It could work for you guys down there though.

No cable damage for me. For me in the snow and wind using a plyers or opener to open up the Jhooks would not work too well. This way I minimize my time at each set when I have to pick up a trap. I just shovel the snow and then quick snip the cable and I am on my way.

i would think that doin it the way that you are would make it harder to reattach it to the cable. but thats just my 2 cents

I don't reaattach to the cable guys. I guess it is something that works for my location. I pull all my rebar stakes over the summer. THen I collect all the washers and start over. If I leave an area I have a trap in it is for a reason, and I have no need to trap there again that winter. I usually leave the location when it is covered by large amounts of snow, I mean upwards of 10ft of drifted snow. THen if I can I will find the trap, snip the cable and be on my way.

Man Jon,you have caught more fox this year then I have up here my whole life and you sound like you are starting to panic,LOL!Trapping k9's up here is crazy different then lower 48.I think they are alot smarter up here.Just keep to what you know and you will be fine.If they are digging or comming to the set from behind then the first thing I would say is dirty traps and if your traps are clean then I would say you have caught all the dumber ones and are now dealing with some educated fox.Look at all the different ways people are trapping marten or lynx.I even find myself getting fustrated sometimes when I see tracks go right past a set.You are not going to find the "sure fire set" that works every time.Keep with what you know and enjoy being out on the line and the rest will happen.Good luck!!
