My first pelts came from emergency and not planned during the Arctic storm so after fleshing I preserved pelts with stock salt. Now I have some used salt and was wondering if there was something useful I can do with it. The last pelt I did my hands were getting tired so it still had quite a bit of flesh on it which made it have more moisture so some of the salt is pretty wet and slightly tainted.

My thoughts are to bake it at a low temperature to remove moisture and use for future hide drying until I have batch of hides or the time to do it in. And along that line of thinking I was wondering if I could use the baked used salt in the pickle and/or tanning solution Boco posted. Would the trace minerals from blood and other impurities cause a problem for the solution? Aside from reusing in the tanning process has anyone came up with good uses for the dirty salt? Live in Texas so there isnt much demand for dealing with icy sidewalks/driveways.

Salt is cheap.Toss the old salt it will probably not be good to re-use in the tanning process. It might be OK but it may contain enough bacteria to spoil parts of a pelt.
Why take a chance.

Teresa, salt made into a brine makes an excellent weed killer for use in sidewalk cracks and driveways

You can use salt multiple times for drying hides if you dry it thoroughly between uses. When salting hides you should salt them, then in a day or two take the now damp salt off and resalt them with dry salt, and depending on thickness and type of hides do that another time or two. I always use clean new salt for at least the last treatment, but for the first treatment or so to take the blood and majority of liquid out used salt is fine. Use it two or three times and throw it out by the time it starts getting greasy (the better you flesh, the longer this will be).

Use it to preserve cut fish for trapping bait.
