I'm working on a chipmunk job and not having much luck, granted I only have had traps out for 3 days. It's in a suburban neighborhood with lots of cats and dogs running around, so I'm trying to be careful. I've got 5, #2 footholds set up side down over their burrows with a combo of crunchy peanut butter, bird seed, and fruit and nut lure on the trigger pan. I got this idea from seeing someone use footholds over gopher holes. I also got 4 exclusion cages over some burrows as well as 2 mice tubes baited with the same combo as the #2s. I've tried to locate as many of their other burrows and pack them in with rocks and junk. So why haven't I trapped anything? Does my setup sound good or are the #2s overkill?

overkill probably with too much pan tension
I had good results with tube traps set on hair trigger or 4x4 or 5x5 cage traps

No need to use bait. I have used 1 1/2 LS with light pan tension set blind in front of their hole. Pound a trap bed with the hammer and lightly cover the trap with grass clippings just enough to break up the outline of the trap. Works very good.

Another good set location for chipmunks is at the entrance to the extension of a rain down spout. Trap set in the same fashion as above.

I had set the tension on all of my footholds to where they were supersensitive but that was about a year ago so maybe corrosion or something has tightened them up. I just put bait on the pan so they would work it a bit more. If they still ain't hitting it in a couple of days from now, I'm just going to put up some bait stations and mouse traps I guess

Rat trap with oversize pans. Baited and blind set along the side of buildings.

I trap 50 to 125 Chipmunks every year. I use a Victor rat trap. There is a point you can bend up on the trigger, on this impale a Chinese Chestnut, acorn, peanut, or nut local for your area on it. My brother in Minnesota uses a Vitor rat trap with the yellow pan with peanut butter and sunflower seeds. I place the trap in front of holes or along side buildings where they run

You may take a few birds with your traps out in the open.

I have used my weasel boxes with the wide pan rat trap inside. Bait with corn, peanuts or sunflower seeds. Pets or birds can't access either.

Rat trap with half a pecan wired to the bait trigger next to the hole= instant death to the striped rodent!

springs may be to strong = to heavy a pan on your #2's plus there is no reason to push up the pan set the trap flat and prop the loose jaw at 90 degrees lay a board on it/ behind it ,cut bigger pans out of cardboard or old shingles attach wit paper clips or hot glue corn to the pan suckers will work all day to carry it off

Probably a scent problem. What is your scent management plan? Rubber gloves are a must! Hazmat suit helps too.

Packing their burrows may prevent them from exiting.
