Is there anywhere to purchase waxed dirt in some sort of bulk like by the 5 gallon bucket and would it be cheaper than $25 for 20 pounds?

The only reasonably priced way to get waxed dirt I know of is to make it yourself.

A five gallon pail of waxed dirt weighs about 35-40 lb. depending on the dirt/sand content. Full disclosure I’ve never weighed one . The math says it is probably closer to 50lb. Water is real close to 8lb to the gallon and dirt sinks ( heavier than water) soooo shipping would be very expensive.
It is not hard to make. I believe there’s several examples in the archives.
If you have access to a cement mixer and a weed burner it is very easy. Bulk wax is about $1.70/lb
I lucked out and got 55lb of food grade, low odor, granulated wax for $117 to my door. 1/8” hardware cloth to screen the dirt and a whole bunch of new buckets and lids. Hope this isn’t info overload.

Takes a lot of wax and time to make right it won’t be cheap. I bought some waxed sand years back it was not cheap and it had thumbnail size rocks in it, I’ll make my own.

I am making it for the first time this year. After I buy the wax, weed burner, cement mixer and buckets I figure I'll still be ahead because I won't get rained out and have to reset.

I've done a lot of reading about this in the archives. When I started down the rabbit hole of waxed dirt I had no idea I would need so much.

I run 6 dozen MB550s and am going to make a hundred gallons just because I have a mental illness when it comes to not overdoing it. And, if I am being honest, I'll likely buy another dozen before next season.

Course dirt and heat lamps slow but it does a nice job for dirt that drains well.

How many of them bags they sell for $25 do you all think would fit in a 5 gallon bucket. I’m pretty sure 3. What’s everyone else think

Keep a bucket of cooled waxed dirt on hand to blend into the final hot batch and roll the mix together to keep it from clumping, it cools faster without the clumping issues. Collect dirt on a very windy day the more wind the better to blow that baby powder dust away from the good course stuff that drains so well.

250wt heat lamps just start high then work your way down to get the best melt bulb height without scorching the batch.

A 5 gallon bucket of waxed sand weighs about 75 lbs. I make about 125 gallons of the sand every year. Save money by buying flake wax at conventions, as shipping is high. You can get into production fairly cheap, just watch for sales on mixer, weed burner and make sure you buy a heat gun. Don't be afraid of Harbor Freight. I bought a cheap mixer there 6 years ago that's still going.

Get out on a windy day sift high enough so the dusty or smaller granules of dirt blow out of the main collection containers you can still use the unwanted to wax dirt for throw dirt to mimic a dig out. Best to have a steady one direction wind or you might look like a coal miner on some days.

I use the 2 huge vent covers to collect the dirt, in the past 4 5 gallon pails strapped together works also, the vent bells are nice for mixing by just rolling it like a heavy drum is rolled.
