I have used snares or CR's, at pockets, cubbies, and snare boxes for many years. As newt and beav stated already there are a few things that can go wrong. One is the stall that Newt mentioned, the lock fires closed but there may not be a lockset, and 2nd is the distance the bait has to be from the opening in the pocket, box, or cubbie to keep the animal moving forward rather than reaching in as beav stated. On these sets or a trail set, the animal has to move forward to fire a swing-out ( standard load) or drag shut (no load) x amount of distance, example only not exact, an 8-inch loop will need to have the bottom of the loop swing or move forward 8 plus 2 inches for a fire or drag. a 7x7 cable with a very heavy lock ( no load) will fall shut but you still do not get the lock set needed to keep the lock on the coon or fox unless forward movement is maintained. I use the double load so the downward fire 2 inches down or swing out is all that is needed to at least fire and get the lock on the critter where the lockset can be made. An overload will do the same thing as my double load except the double load has a triggering of sorts that keeps the loop open until triggered by the bottom of the cable and the overload can fire at the slightest touch of the cable. ( wind or critter) So a lot of closed loops with a larger overload may happen because of the stall that is going to happen on every pocket, box, or cubbie. Eric Spaces mink snare is an overload, but the small loop is not affected by the wind like a large loop will be. For a double load or overload, you should have a 15 to 18 inches distance from the cable to the bait. I can get them 12 to 15 but the farther the better. On a standard load (swing out) you will need 24 inches most times for pockets or boxes and 36 inches for a cubbie is not too much for fox. openings should be big enough that the animal feels at ease to walk into. coon pockets for me are 8 to 10 inches. For you boys that can use foot traps, yep, I agree, maybe too much work. just put a foot trap or DP in. (I put DP s in pockets also) LOL. But when the only thing you have is cable that you can use, well we just get it figured out whatever way we can with what we can use. LOL This is just the way I do it not the only way, not the best way, just what I do, that is until you show me another way then I will incorporate that too LOL I got no pride in how I catch them just pride in catching them LOL
