I only get a few incidental spring rats in my beaver traps. Right or wrong, I have diced them up and put enough glycerin in a jar to cover them. I add a couple pinches of SB to preserve them. It turns to paste in about a year.

I’ve heard not to process rat glands until just before use but they seem to still hold their smell when I do the above.

Put them in a container at room temps cover with vodka. Shake occasionally to ensure good contact with the glands.

I recommend that method for private use and shelf storage of those glands. Small volumes of mink glands hold nicely in the same manner.

I prefer glands that are seasonal catch glands and frozen for the short term prior to sale. They can be refrigerated also short term until sale. If kept frozen they should be thawed to room temperature to determine accurate volume prior to sale..

Thanks, I've been freezing them to sell. But also noticed the freezer burn

Thanks Turtle. Bought a small quantity of mink glands and didn’t care to keep them in the freezer forever. Going to try Bob’s suggestion. Thanks Bob

Cheap Vodka like Nikolai brand will work fine. I use Everclear for most tincturing due to the higher proof but it isn't cheap and you must be licensed by the state here to purchase it locally.

I am like Bob I use Everclear for the most part. Expensive but the results are worth it for me.
