That comb and waddle wouldn't make it a month through winter here.

That comb and waddle wouldn't make it a month through winter here. Good point. I have one or two every winter with frozen combs.

I think it's an Andalusian. Andalusians, like most other breeds of Spanish chickens have white ear lobes. It appears to be the indigo color phase of the Andalusian chicken breed. To make the best color andalusians you breed indigo to black, which produces deep blue birds with darker looking colors on the feather edges, producing somewhat of a lacing effect. You can get black, indigo, andalusian and light andalusians out of Andalusian chickens. You should breed him to solid black hens to get the best colored offspring. The indigo gene is a color modifier. I have it in pigeons and quail and have had it Americauna chickens. The same color is in ball pythons too now. Reptile color genetics are virtually identical to bird color genetics with the same lethal factors for genes that are called dominant opal and almond in pigeons, existing in reptiles. I like playing with color genetics, mostly in quail and pigeons. Keith

If he's supposed to be standard bred it's pretty poor breeding. Not to say he's bad but I don't see standard bred anything other than he's a mediterranean class type. Andalusians are out of and still are sort of a landrace breed, so they vary quite a bit. I raise traditional, Malaysian Seramas, another landrace breed. I think many American breeders are ruining Seramas. They are breeding to an extreme unhealthy form, overly small size and are ruining the friendly, non aggressive personality of the Seramas by crossing in other breeds like Old English Game Bantams. I really dislike the frizzle gene some breeders have put in Seramas. It makes them ugly, in my opinion and makes them unable to survive normal Winter temperatures in Ohio, without heat. Many breeders like to take hearty landrace breeds of chickens and other animals and breed them to a standard that ruins them for their original purpose. Look what the AKC is doing to border collies and has done to many breeds of hunting dogs. Keith

Oh, and your original question was "What y'all think of this chicken," so I should say I think he's handsome, and he thinks he's handsome too. Is he friendly to you? That might be the determining factor. Good luck!

I'd say take them both...if you like chickens, and she likes chickens, then you'll get along fine. Don't make any commitments until you know what she is willing to contribute though!
