Anyone make spoonbill oil and use it in any recipes? Now that snagging season is over I have about 7 gallons of ground trimmings and the oil rises in it daily. I pour off about 2 cups of oil a day. I also have 5 5gal buckets of the backs, belly and skins all sealed up in the sun. Anyone know when I should open them and pour off the oil?[Linked Image]

I use it. It's good stuff. If you have those 5 gallon buckets sealed air tight I'd be a little worried about gasses building pressure. Make all you can. If you make more than you need it has good value, u can trade it or sell it. Don't mix it with urine in any formulations as they react to each other in a negative way and cause extreme expansion of product and excessive gas built up.

The buckets all have air stones in the lid to allow them to vent

I pull off my fish oil beginning of fall. Leave it over the winter and check again in the beginning of summer, if you've never done it before this way You'll know then if you got it all in the fall.

Well gentlemen I truly appreciate those words of advice. Probably saved my butt from the misses since the lure shed is shared with her rabbits and quail.

My trout oil starts out golden in color and turns dark brown to black as it ages.

Tony I ground up all the red meat and trimmings from cleaning the fillers. That is the oil and juice I poured off the bucket every afternoon for a week or so. I do have a 5 gallon bucket out on the pond dam that is just belly fat that is rendering. I checked them this weekend bu the oil seems different and has a more rancid smell to it.

So is that all fish oil that reacts so strongly to urine or just spoonbill oil? We don't have spoonbills out here, but I've never mixed any fish oil with urine.

To risk ask my question? if you use a commercial Bait solution is it not advisable to use Spoonbill Oil to spike it up?

Best thing would be for u to ask the maker of the solution is there's urine in it. Just give a call or shoot them an email. I'm not an expert on everyone's bait solution but I think it a pretty good chance most already have some fish oil in them...???

I am certain that many if not all solutions will have some type of fish oil as an ingredient. The best fish oils are the sun rendered oils. Pure fatty tissue with no protein meats attached will give you the most clear oil. Belly fat alone that has been handled well will yield golden oil color.

This is oil rendered from from male spoonbill belly fat. It is several years old. No color change. Rendered on the stove on low heat. Urine will mix in it when added to a ground meat base. A tablespoon or so in a couple cups of dry cat food makes a great coon dogproof bait.

This is flathead oil done the same way. Another great fish oil. this oil is several years older than the spoonbill oil. The spoonbill oil is about 6 years old.

This is flat head oil and pee.

It gets a little cloudy but added to a base material it can improve attractiveness.

I had some fish grease melted it done and added some 2-year-old rendered whole fish. It took maybe a min to expand and go everywhere fast and I couldn't stop it LOL Man I won't be doing that again.

I remember years ago when learning about different blends of ingredients. I made a batch of lure up figured all looked and smelled right. Put the lid on and left a side loose for some gas escape as is needed in most cases.

Came in the next morning to check the batch and I couldn't find the lid from that bucket. It wasn't lying anywhere around the bucket area. Had me puzzled for a couple days as to where it went.

I put another lid on the bucket. Next morning the first lid was lying on the floor near the bucket. What the heck. ??

I don't know why I looked up but I did and I saw a round stain on the upper floor ceiling panel area above the bucket. Apparently the lid blew off and up then stuck on the ceiling for a couple days then finally released and fell. Go figure that one out.

All the stars had to be aligned for the lid to blow up, flip around and stick on the wet side just right to develop some kind of suction and hold there for two days. A little spill over was evident on the bucket but not significant. Good thing the lid blew off. May have been Mount Vesuvius in there:).
