Nice! bunch of our snow melted in town, starting to get brown out the country side. Went out and got a few seals on the ice for people in town. Tried out the 22-250 remington, tack driver. First two trips was back in town less then half an hour with seal.

I went and hung around the old bears crossing spots and guess who showed himself...

A trip to remember for me. Crazy how things work out sometimes when planning, persistence and just plain old luck all work together for the best results you could hope for. Stand out trip for me in my lifetime so far.

Thanks John.
I’m pretty sure this is the bear I’ve been after since 2012. Had him patterned pretty good and timing was perfect this year. I was heading towards where I figured his den was with high hopes of finding him when I spotted an older blown in set of big tracks headed up a long creek that runs over a high pass that I was going to check. I was on the other side of that pass earlier and knew the tracks didn’t cross over the top. He uses that route every year. I checked a few miles further just because I was there and it’s so remote that you just want to keep going but at the same time every little shake and rattle from the snowmobile gets you a bit on edge. luckily I ran into bad weather and I turned back. Zero visibility at times but still I was seeing a lot of medium and decent sized bear tracks plus a lot of wolf and wolverine tracks. Seen 3 lone wolves and a wolverine, 4 bears plus my first 6 mallards and 9 specks over my 2 day trip. Oh and about 25 moose. I was headed back to the old big tracks and planned to walk up the ridge in the creek he was in , get some elevation and try to spot the bear but when I took the first left turn past the old cabin he was just sitting right where I planned to walk up in the only opening around. I didn’t shoot at first because it looked small for some reason with the weather and snow. He was slowly walking across the short opening at about 95-100 yards and I wasn’t sure if I was going to shoot. Luckily he turned his head at a certain angle and I seen that brow and realized what I was looking at He was about 2-3 feet from thick timber and disappearing once again. After all these years it wasn’t my trusty core lokts that did the job. It was a last minute trip by myself and the handiest bullet I had limited experience with was those Sierra game king rounds I got last spring. One shot did the job and dropped him hard but with the thick timber all around I gave him two more to be sure. Couldn’t take no chances being alone and all. Took my time and clean skinned it right there on the spot wondering the whole time if it’s really the one I’ve been chasing. Looking at the last tracks he made makes me pretty sure he is especially with the location and just some gut feeling I have. Lots of thinking since I got him especially during that long skinning job. I’m thinking to get a rug made for my house. Be pretty hard to sell it. Kind of a bittersweet feeling now. I guess I’ll have to go find a new set of big tracks to follow.

Left was a shoulder shot and right was through the ribs and heart. The shoulder shot was about half an inch inside the opposite shoulder and I easily cut it out. The vitals shot almost made a pass though. It was poking though the skin on the far side. Didn’t really try to find the kill shot but I know corelokts don’t smash apart when they hit solid neck bone. No complaints with these bullets.

Thats a fine grizzly you got Ryan and great bullet performance. I have been after one grizzly for several years before it disappeared, couldn't even imagine chasing one for the years you have.

Good on ur bear Ryan where u been watching it for a while. Continuously impressed w how much animals of different kinds u have there compared to our area of the north. Lots of fur animals moose and caribou and few more things. If I were religious I would say u guys are blessed. Only thing we got a lot of these days is seals - got to work real hard for the rest of it especially after our caribou crashed.

Good to know about those bullets. Looks like they perform like the Remington CoreLokt.

nice bear, I really enjoy the remington corelokts for hunting. Was our hunting ammo since I can remember. I reload a bunch of my ammo now, when buying factory ammo I lean more toward the corelokts. Used 150 grain bullets in 270 winchester and 150 or 180 grain bullets in 30-06. Use 55 grains for the 22-250 I just acquired recently.

Thanks for sharing the story! They are some tough animals for sure! Glad he didn't make it into the thick stuff, that is never a fun experience. Happy for you that you got the one you have been chasing. smile

Very nice. Getting an old bear is a great accomplishment. Well done.

The smile says it all. Looks nice to be out there.
Last years production of Canada's are flocking up now, so they should be up there anytime now.

Nice, I'll saw, honker goslings are hatched around here now.
