I was thinking of using cervo motors and for the twisting part any help would be nice and thank you.

Disclaimer- I am not a physicist.

Ethan, you need an order of operation, essentially, what specifically do you want this robot to do. Will this just flip a bottle and return to the starting point, or will it have other mobile ability. Once you’ve figured out exactly what you want your robot to do, then you can decide how you want to operate you robot. That’s when you’ll have to decide what your power source will be and what equipment will work the best for your mode of operation. The use of servos which are nice in terms of setting specific positions, speed and repeatability.

There will be many ways to skin this cat, cost and your own mechanical and programming ability will determine your path moving forward. Apply the KISS technique.

Automation of equipment is the way most operations are headed.

Best of luck, hope you learn a lot

You could go pneumatic. You can control pressure and flow.

it depends what you need to do

if taking a bottle and merely turning it over and setting it back down again a bottle flip a clamp , lift rotate release could be done

a pneumatic cylinder like this https://www.toolots.com/si40x100.ht...45CFndKa19XjKXLi3lQ_SiM3bz8aAjAJEALw_wcB could be used to propel the bottle adjusting air pressure and actuator time can control the action your going to need an air source, pneumatics because they build pressure over a period of time the motion starts a little slower but then has good power

what do you get for components from the school or is this a purchase your own components project?

Post the project requirements here. Easier for us to help if we know the parameters. I love projects like this.

It needs to have a moving leg that can hold on to a bottle and release it when it gets to a specific angle so that way the bottle will be at the right height from the table so that when the mass spreads out the bottle will have enough time to slow down and land

So, you need translational motion to get it started on it's arching trajectory toward the table and rotational motion so it does the right number of flips.

I think a piece of PVC pipe for the bottle to slide through works as that arm.

[Linked Image]

The spring pulls down one end causing the arm to rotate - that's the rotational motion. As the arm moves, centripetal force causes the bottle to slide through the arm and out into the air (translational motion). Notice the fixed pin. That pokes through a hole in the arm and keeps the bottle in place until the motion starts. Once the arm starts to move, it slips away from the fixed pin and the bottle is free to slide.

It's simple and I like simple solutions. To make the bottle actually land on the bottom you'll have to adjust the spring tension, angle of start, and pin location until it works - if it ever works.

One advantage of this design is that the translational motion will be fairly fast and the rotation slow. If it's a high enough arc, it will be coming down almost vertically with very little rotation. Maybe, just maybe, it will actually stick the landing coming in that way.

Sorry my drawing is sideways. I can build stuff but taking pictures with a phone is hard.

I also have to figure out how much force i apply and the angle its released and the angle it starts to spin at basically i have to make a robot or mechanism to help me figure out what it takes to make a almost perfect bottle flip and how much mass is in the bottle its difficult i know that

Sounds like a costly project. Servo's are not cheap. Like mentioned before I would look into a mechanical way to complete this project. Think of the old catapults used in mid-evil war? Maybe one of the grabber/tongs with rubber cups on the end old people carry around picking up trash? Think outside the box!

I know the drawings crappy but i was thinking of a motorized arm with angled hooks to give the twisting motion of the wrist and the arm would have a stop bar so it could come to a complete stop as humans arms would not sure if it would but its prob gonna be close if the ramps/ hooks work right . I will cause i dont have very much to spend but maybe the tongs would be a good idea if i can get them to hold the bottle

If you need the mass of a water bottle the average bottle is 16.9 oz and 1 1l2 lbs according to google, so there's 453.592 grams in a pound, so a average water bottle would have a mass of 680.388 grams. If you need to get rid of some water, so it balances out to land say around down to the label you would put a cup on a scale that measures grams (You can get them from Walmart cheep) and hit the level out button then pour the water in the cup and take the weight and subtract 680.388 grams, and you have the mass of the water bottle adjusted to getting a balanced flight path and landing.
