One of the areas I trap has great cat sign but it is too rocky to drive a stake, so I am going to try using some drags for them. I have never ran drags before , what is the best chain setup, and is there a way to keep the cat from getting ten feet up a tree before he gets tangled up?

Not really, even if the drags hooks at the base of the tree, they'll be up the tree. Just keep your eyes up and ears open when looking for your trap.

Cordless drill and a good concert drill bit and some kind of expandable anchor.

Or heavy rock, if thats all that is around

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

10-15 ft 3/32 7x7 extension cable. Double ferrell and loop on each end. Cable around a tree, between boulders that fell together(except sandstone), etc. Use s hook, j hook, or even easier a quicklink through the trap swivel and through the cable loop.

Run the cable around whatever your anchoring to, then back through the loop on the ither end, then attach it too your trap. Very easy and the only way i secured traps when cat trapping high desert country in the mountains.

What KS longliner suggests. Only way I roll when I walk into set up for cats.

you can tie a drag to a tree also with some tie wire. Cable works great but it gets kinked up with catchs and will end up discarded and replaced. not cause its weakened but because it gets to be a real pain. the trade off is a drag chain and tie wire are lots heavier. Im just trying to give you some choices.

Sometimes this happens no matter what you do if your using a long cable or chain either one.

I use a wood log stub snag what ever you want to call it. its just a solid piece of firewood 8 inch around 18-20 in long or so stapled about a foot down the chain from the trap. with the added log set up i can use 3-4 ft.extension chain and fox size grapples instead of 5-6 ft chain and coyote drags, I have also used rocks and half a cement blocks but i prefer the wood as I just tap in a fence staple as apposed to messing with wire and worrying if it will hold up under the chewing, Set up this way i don't find anymore cats peering down from above though I did have a coyote tangled up in a bush when he went over a stonewall once. But then Ive used about anything to anchor my traps over the years. Used old tires found on location with good results. I like the cable around a free too for cats in a pinch. be versatile and have several back up plans. Scout ahead so you know just what you'll need to bring to each set.

A cat in a tree is still a cat if you ask me. It's not my fav place to find them but I check too many empty traps I guess some I'm glad when I git one
