The rusty crayfish is the invasive species. TRAPPING IN THE NORTH ,they gathered on one of the lakes I was trapping--took 8 mink from one trap.
What town are you in?

All lakes in the area will have crayfish. Just a matter of the size of them, and the density in the lake. Try different areas at the lake your cabin is on first, and see what you come up with.

Call up the Brainerd DNR and see if there are any nearby lakes with a lot of crayfish/rusty crayfish in them.

If those don’t work, a lot of Rusty Crayfish are taken out of the Woman Lake chain, or Leech Lake. Both are fairly close to you in Pequot.

I think you can take up to 25 pounds of crayfish for personal consumption.
I have eaten crayfish tails in the past and like them. Good luck!

The rocks around the Mayo Lake Dam was a place that I used to catch some back in the day. That is close to Pequot. It is located South of town where Mayo Lake exits into Mayo brook which empties into Upper Gull Lake. The ones I used to catch were not very big however. Rocky areas are good places to look wherever you are.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I agree, rocky areas are the best spots.

Mike Kelly gives some good advice. Realistically you want to find a place that has the rustys, they are bigger than the natives.

Off the top of my head regulations are you need a fishing license, up to twenty-five pounds per license, trap needs to be tagged, and i believe there is some trap size and mesh regs. You can transport crayfish but they can only be used for fishing bait in the lake they came out of.

Another good spot is under docks.

Let us know how it goes. I love a good old crayfish boil.
