A friend of mine needs a bat exclusion job done on his house in central NY. Apparently a few little browns are taking up residence there. It's not an old house, built maybe 25 years ago and in very good shape. Cedar siding, 2 story, good access to attic space. Regardless, the bats found a way in. The NWS guy proposes some spray foam to seal any cracks/holes and install a short piece of pvc pipe from the attic thru the siding with a 90° elbow pointed down towards the ground. I guess the idea is that the bats can get out, but can't get back in.

He told my friend it'll cost around $1,000 to $1,200. A few hours expected, with some ladder work, but easy access, level ground, and not in the boondocks. Does that price seem reasonable? He plans to get a couple more quotes, but just wants to know if that seems like a good strategy and ok price, so I told him I'd check with the folks on here. Any comments appreciated. Thanks

It is difficult to assess a price without seeing the structure. Prices can be all over the place depending upon how good of a job a company does and their experience level. Type of materials, how cosmetic their work is etc. The eviction is the easy part of a good bat job. Proper structural sealing with good materials are where the costs and experience comes to play or if any clean out is needed. Preventing re entry is where the experience comes into play. If not you will just move them around to other potential entry opportunities

We don't use much foam unless it is necessary where you may not be able to use flashing to seal a large area with some durable backer material. Silicone material is the best choice in most cases for sealing. If a Pageris foam is used once it has cured it is best to glaze it over with a skim of silicone to keep the UV from damaging it over the years. Some consumer foams are high expansion materials and can be unsightly as they weather and change color. The latex foams are junk in our experience for exterior use.

attic access means very little to me, work would be done on the outside. I for one can not physically get to places in a attic that would need to be sealed

All bat work as far as exclusion seal work is done on the exterior of a structure. I don't know any that do internal sealing as a preventative action.

depends on the state

Why is that? Time when young ones can fly on their own?

Many states will have black out dates, when the young are dependent on females, and do not leave the maternity colonies. Some states will regulate the dates when exclusion is permitted, usually no exclusion from May 1st. till at least Aug. 1st. New York has recommended dates, but no regulations on this.Every state and peoples opinion is going to differ on these dates. If your friend is going to have his home sealed and excluded , pay much more attention to the companies reputation, and years they have been doing bat work than cost of the job.
