I have a half dozen Sleepy Creek 1 1/2 long spring traps. I'd like to use for fox and raccoon, what modifications are recommended?

Anyone ever use the base plates with the D-ring on the end opposite the spring?

Wouldn't recommend using them on land for anything other than possums and weasels.

When I used em in water, I moved the chain to the no spring side. Run em on drowners.

If there were any mink around would they be suitable for that (water sets)?

Thanks SNIPERB

I'll move the chain to the frame as you described and reserve them for water sets.

I’ve held 3 or 4 Red Fox, 1 bobcat, numerous Fisher and Marten and my Dad caught a coyote in one. Not to mention the Mink, Muskrat, Beaver and otter. Although, they happened to be set at a pocket set for mink. Would I set some up to be used specifically on land for Fox? If I didn’t have a better trap to choose from, I’d say yes.

If I were to use them for fox or coon I would probably purchase springs and add one to the other side. They are not that spendy.

If it were me I would use those 6 1.5 long springs on rats and use 1.5 coils for coons and fox. If you only have those 6 traps and want to trap coons I would sell them and buy 1.5 coils. 1.5 coilsprings are 1.5 size traps. 1.5 single long springs are 2 size traps with one instead of two springs. That extra size under the jaws makes them a poor choice for coon and the 1.5 coil is a faster closing trap on fox.
The 1.5 single long spring is a very good rat trap with a nice catch area for a higher hold and good weight for drowning.
