I have a buddy who marks timber for a living. He told me of a day he was on a mountain coming down over when he stopped atop a rock to get a look where the property line was when he noticed a small rattler. After looking some more, he said they were everywhere, that the ground was crawling with them!
His claim was...the next 50' was covered by 3 steps! LOL.

That looked like a pick up truck full of snakes, from big to little. Always heard about balls of snakes, got to see one in Wy about twenty years ago. Drove into a dog town, to set up for fox, and at a dog hole that had been augered out by a badger, there laid a ball of snakes about the size of a basketball. All different kinds, bull snakes, rattlers, even garter snakes. Had a guy from Ut riding with me, and when I got out for a closer look, he started screaming at me to get back in the truck. I got about five foot from that ball and it starts rolling right into the badger/dog hole. Was buzzing pretty good, and there were seven or eight rattlers about three feet long laying around that den too, all getting ready for the winter sleep. Cool experience!
YOU CAN IGNORE REALITY, BUT YOU CANNOT IGNORE THE CONSEQUENCES OF IGNORING REALITY.
I think it was probably a Go-Pro or other stick mounted camera that was being poked at the rattlers. I was surprised by how non-aggressive they were. They would clearly rather warn and retreat, then attack.
I have only seen one wild rattlesnake in Ohio. It was dead and missing the head and rattle. I used to catch hundreds of snakes a year. I've found garter snake dens with around that many snakes, but they were obviously much less impressive.

Ran into a den on the White River years back deer hunting in November nothing there in the AM I made a pass up cliff trail at lunch time, it came alive the one thing that sticks in my mind was the smooth trails between the cracks in the ground. The noise was loud when they fired up.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
