Got a few bear hides tanned by a buddy. The big one is a little over 6 ft then smaller ones 4 ft. There really isnt a place to compare for pricing. What should I be asking?

Check taxidermy.net. See what people are asking. Might post them for sale there. Taxis would buy hides to make into rugs.

A taxidermist will want to know what type of tan was done on it, because some tans are better for taxidermy (soaking and stretching, etc.) than others, so if you don't know you might ask the guy who tanned it what was used. Taxidermists will generally buy hides properly fleshed with lips turned, etc. and salted for about the same price minus tanning expenses as they will already tanned hides because they just send them to the tannery and get the tan they want on them.

For comparison I can get around $200 for a 6+ taxidermy quality (no rubs or defects) bear hide here green, with the skull in it. The buyers want the skull, even if busted, they can still salvage the teeth, they will pay less if you want to keep the skull. And I have a taxidermist who will pay me $200 to flesh and salt bear hides. That is better than most will pay for that service, but I would think you could ask at least $400 plus whatever your tanning costs (or if you got a special good buddy discount, look up what a tannery like Moyles charges and add that).

The smaller bears the buyers generally buy just as parts bears (teeth and claws) because there are so many of them available they don't tan them no matter how good of quality unless they have a standing order, which they usually already have one in the freezer to fill. Still you can generally get $60-$75 for a parts bear that size (they buy parts bears strictly on claw length).

Not sure how our prices compare to Alaskas, but that should give you a ballpark idea.

Thanks for the input guys. The wife did a little research and found $10 a square foot. She had those jokers sold that night.

If they sold that fast, the price was likely a little low!

I have sold green bear hides here to taxidermist that were 6ft or more and averaged $20 a running foot for mine. I didn't know if that is good or not. At least somebody got use out of them.
