I am in the market for a spotting scope but can't afford a high end one. Does anyone have a reccomendation for a midrange one?

I am a believer in Leupold also. Picked up a 20/ 80 mid range for around$300 a couple years back for a sheep hunt. On the 20 setting I can see quite a ways away and good quality. Glasses up a deadhead ram from a couple miles out ( as the crow flys). Once I start cranking the power up I do loose quality through it. Two reasons I stay with them is I have beat the ever loving tar out of a couple scopes and they are lighter than most if you are packing in and need to keep weight down. Some friends have the high vortex and they are great from a solid rest. JMO. Good luck. Jon

Got a midrange. Bauch& Lomb About $285 20x60. I can see horns and song birds at over a mile. Get a good trypod or the best glass won’t be of much use.

The saying “you get what you pay for” is very true in the spotting scope business. Not sure what your budget is but spend some time reading reviews thru multiple sources before buying one. I’ve been very happy with my Vortex Razor scope, but it still doesn’t compare to the high end stuff. Vortex razor HD start at 1000, thats high end for me.

I would be using it to glass across canyons for bear and deer when I find something worth looking at with my binoculars, also judging horns. Thanks for everyone's input.

I suggest going to someplace you can look though and compare, you will find that with many once you get above 20-30x the quality of view drops significantly on many scopes, there is little need to add the weight of a scope with 60x zoom on the high end if you can’t use it.

A really good binocular teamed up with a tri pod after seeing some thing that you are really interesting in.

I would much rather glass with binoculars than a spotting scope. I got a set of 15x60 Doctors when I lived in AK. I can glass miles with them. A spotting scope is fine for looking at something once you know where it is. I can not sit behind a spotting scope all day. I did a fair amount of road side glassing with them. You can cover more ground looking than walking.
