What brand is your favorite dirt hole auger? I am looking for one that doesn’t get stuck as much. Maybe they all do. Thank you in advance.

The ones made by Papio Creek Trapping Supply cost more than those found in the big supply catalogs but are USA made by a handicapped veteran and are heavy duty. Cost is relative to durability and these will outlive the foreign ones 2X's over. All augers will stick in most soils if you use them like a drill so the trick is to pull the auger up after you sink it in 3 inches and let the flighting clean the hole before you drive it down another 3 inches. You will get the rhythm down after a few holes and it takes seconds to do a 12-15 inch deep hole (unless you are using the 4-6" diam. size ones). I use the 6" diam. one for the trap bed in non-frozen soil and 1" to 3" diam. augers for most holes where the frost is 1-2" deep. After that its a chisel on a rotary hammer to get through the frost in our silty clay soils........................ the mike

Saw that Ryobi is now making a battery powered auger that has a 6" auger.

I get mine from Southern Snare's & Supply. They sell them in their "Performance" line of products. They are badass, but they don't make a hole in your pocketbook, just in the dirt, lol!

I've considered one of these but my soil has a lot of shale stone. Anyone have any experience on how these will work in my kind of soil?

Weld a small piece of key stock that sticks out a 1/4” from the cutting edge. That will stop it from sticking on you. Good luck
