Over the past couple of weekends I’ve been trying to take care of some raccoons that have been killing a family member’s chickens. I had also seen a coyote chasing a goose last Sunday and figured it was a likely suspect too.
With my limited experience trapping I’ve never had the confidence to put in a blind set but felt that was the only option for this situation. I put two in last night and had my first double this morning. Wow, I’m hooked. I’m definitely going to look harder this season for places I can use blind sets, and not just for raccoons.

Nice job.

Blind sets will catch every critter even with cage traps (double door).

Trail / blind sets are extremely productive when you have a busy trail. I catch everything on trail sets. I was a late bloomer to really understand the effectiveness of trail setting. Once you get it figured out with confidence behind each set the sky is the limit.

You will be hooked now.

Blind sets are extremely productive in some situations.

One of the issues I’ve had with blind sets has been identifying locations. The area I was trapping has real sandy soil which made the trail and the pinch points stick out like a sore thumb so I figured I would try it. I didn’t have a lot of confidence that I’d catch anything, let alone a double. I can’t wait for this season to try some blind sets where I normally trap.

Way to go. First time I tried blind sets it was killing me not to put bait or lure at the set...habits are hard to break.
After a bunch of coon, fox, and coyotes I'm a firm believer in a good blind set and now always throw one in, often where I also have had other sets. Lots of surprises and opportunities to talk to myself on way back to the truck..."man I'm glad I put that blind set in."

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Just another trick to add to your bag of tricks to help increase your catches. Very simple to make that can yield some nice results. Well worth throwing a few out there.

If there aren't any pinch points you just make them yourself. I set lots of trail sets for cats. Many follow cattle and sheep trails. Old and new ones.

There are many red cedar trees of all sizes where I trap. I carry a rebar and pound in some pilot holes and jam a couple cedar branches into each hole to make my pinch points. Some times just a small branch or two is all that is necessary to shoulder guide the animal , then get your stepping sticks or other such materials in position.

I always drag or slide wire my trail sets and set them in the better entanglement locations. You hate to booger up a great location with a coon , possum or skunk catch messing things up for you.

I have been known to add some scent of my choice in an elevated position at times. Not at the set proper however.

Blind sets and trail sets are my go to, doesn’t matter which way the wind blows, the mood of the animal, or the direction of travel.

Not sure if this is valid or not but one of the reasons I decided to try a blind set is that without bait or lure nothing is attracted to the trail or the sets other than what normally run that trail.

A little tip don’t be a dummy like me and catch them a little farther away from the fence. He was buried up.

I had one last year that I set on a coon trail, caught one, and reset...well, rain happened and the set remained underwater/ice for the remainder of the season, I caught about four more without having to do anything but reset the trap! Great learning experience!

That's exactly what I learned from this. Sets are a tool, just pick the right tool for the job at hand.

Thanks fellas, there's some good info here, keep it coming, I've got a lot to learn.
