I really cool member here sent me one if their old hog ringer guns and now I'm itching to build some more traps. My question is what's eveyone using for their cage wire ? I normally use horse pannel because I can just cut and weld them together then ring some hard ware cloth where I want . I know I need at least a 14ga would prefer a 12 if possible. River dale seems to be the top choice but is their anything cheaper ? I'd prefer something I could just order though my local feed store if possible.

Thanks !

Forget local feed stores your wasting your money it’s mostly if not all made in China garbage it’s a hard wire with poor welds some welds will break just trying to bend it over the cage frames. Even the good old American brand name makers are made with junk wire now.

Klubertanz in Wi is the place to get real cage wire another is Bass but I never dealt with Bass yet. Know your wire if you go with the 12.5 you can go with 1X2 rather then 1X1 also get the galvanized AFTER welded as it protects the welds that way. Buy your main body wire then get roll of end wire in 1X1 to save time cutting up full rolls to cover the ends.

You need help on this PM we can talk about it in depth lots of things a can do with cages with adjustments and wire applications depending what your looking to do. I made a break out of 2X4s to make sharper corners to square them up.

TSC carries Red Brand wire. Most do not have cage wire but I would think they could order it. I am not sure if you have TSC there or not. Red brand is made in the states.

Make sure you measure that cage wire before you buy it. Wire to wire needs to be on the inch. 1x1x36 should measure true. A lot of 1x1 wire might be 1 1/32 or 1 1/16 makes it tough to bend on the wire.

If a person built their cages out of 1/2x1" would it help keep raccoon from reaching through and tearing the cage up as often?

http://www.klubertanz.com is the best hands down.

Law Dog has some good advise.
When the NAFA mink producers were having a convention I happened to be working at the hotel and the garbage bag was an old NAFA bag.
Opened up a few interesting conversations with some wire producers. the breeds of mink were so much stronger and the sprays they had to use to disinfect dissolved the welds. With the loss of so many ranches there must be some wire around they will not be using sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
Look up in the bankruptcy at NAFA and start with some of the ranch mink guys.

Been through the hardware store wire route myself it looks nice around my Wife's garden keeping the chickens out now just not up to the task at hand. Some of the good wires have a zinc/galvanized coating for protection last for many years NEVER broke a wire or had a coon break the 12.5 coated wire yet. Live and learn. [Linked Image]

Klubertanz and Bass will both deliver wire and other cage building materials they sell, to rabbit shows they are attending, for free, if there is space on their trucks. If you contact them, they will tell you which shows they are going to. It may save you a small fortune on shipping. It was over $1200.00 for shipping on the last wire I got from Klubertanz. Fortunately, Ohio State University paid for it.

Where do the guys along the coast get their wire from for crab pots, lobster traps and such I'd look into that maybe. Riverdale makes that wire I use for Lobster traps I read somewhere.

So side note , anyone mess with this company ? Their selling 50' of 10ga 2x2 with free shipping. It a little more than me buying horse pannel locally but I mean I could definitely use this type of wire for frameless cages if their legit

I get Riverdale wire for crab, conch pots, but it's the vinyl coated stuff, (PVC) . Riverdale wire isn't like it used to be either...long story.
There's also an Italian maker of PVC coated wire thats a little cheaper then Riverdale and just as good, begins with a C, but can't remember the name...The dealer I use carries both. Not sure the PVC wire would be good for cages, but it's pretty tough stuff, Holds up in salt water and sun for years.

Hardware store Galv. wire is crap, The old hot dipped wire was good, but about impossible to find, or afford.

The whole problem with wire is the delivery cost.

The 1X2 wire is cheaper then the 1X1 wire of the same thickness per roll as it takes less wire to make a roll so less material is used, Also get the 1inch cut across the end of the roll so your not losing 2 inches every time you make a cut.

Then get a short roll to cover the ends and even the bottoms I buy a 15” X100 ‘ 1X1 rolls for my 14X14 cage ends that is to save the bigger rolls from being chopped up to cover the ends openings.
