You are correct, my memory is faulty. My memory is getting more faulty by the days, so I know what you mean. This stuff is what I did for 20 years, so I do have some knowledge of it, still.

But I do recall being taught to leave nothing of use behind if at all possible. If it can't be destroyed then booby trap it or otherwise deny it's use. Even the expended tube from the LAW weren't to be dropped and left behind.
They probably frown on booby traps as well. I was taught the same as well. The reason I recall the thermite is because this is what we were required to put on our safes of classified material as we exited. It was over twenty years ago for me. Been 30 for me. But I did it for my primary job.

Thermite grenade: One used pop or beer can. 3 parts aluminum powder to 8 parts iron oxide powder. (mixed well) One flare ignitor. 1/8" canon fuse 6" piece. Magnesium ribbon 2" piece. Fill can with mix, intertwine fuse and ribbon, moisten flare ignitor with alcohol into putty and mold around fuse/ribbon strips.....place one end of 'fuse' into can opening and tape in place. You keep the fuse/ribbon even on one end and that is what you mold the ignitor material around......the long end of fuse is so you have a bit of time to get away....

I believe you have that about right.

Your local paint store may sell bulk aluminum powder. Mike
