Bunny hunting season approaching, and I was running into various rabbits and hares this week. Thought it might be a good subject for this week.

White-tail Jackrabbits are numerous around here. They are up to 10 pounds in weight (heavier than many of our red foxes), and are certainly decent table fare if prepared properly.

Black-tailed jackrabbits are sometimes (every ten years) extremely numerous in certain areas. Not my favorite for eating, although they are marginally palatable, in my opinion.

Snowshoe hares are also cyclic in higher, forested habitats. Certainly edible, but, in my opinion, rather bland meat.
[Linked Image]

The mountain cottontail (or Nuttall's cottontail) is unquestionably my favorite for hunting and for eating.

My bride with a nice meal of cottontails. Rarely have I seen another person hunting cottontails; probably why I like hunting them so much.

Cottontails are definitely great table fare. I enjoy hunting them with a muzzleloader (20 gauge) and the bow.

Nessmuck - yep, made that bow myself. It's American Elm, pulls 47# at 27 inches.

Jack,
when down in your area I would see these little cottontails, not the size I would say the size of normal cottontails. Yes they are good eaters {normal size} but jacks {no pun intended} are so tough to eat but fun to hunt and I had a neighbor lady {bohemian } that took all I could bring to her. I believe she pressured cooked them.

Hunt with your Kids, not for them.

Lots of snowshoe hares here . The jacks are south of here in the more open drier regions.
To keep with the theme, I dont have photos but I do have some images to contribute ...

Saluki coursing dogs are used to run Jackrabbits all over the country and elsewhere in the world. Fur-Fish-Game had me do these three images for an article on coursing hounds . You have to imagine the hare at top speed in acute axis turn in front, the two hounds just behind following every zig and zag.

Sharon -

Too bad the English language is so inept. There are not enough adjectives that appropriately characterize your artwork. That bunny on the bottom is simply ________.

Many thanks for your kind thoughts, Jack. And thank you , Pawnee.

If it wasn't for the kind of photography that you do, and others, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on in correct reference material to guide by. All artists need that guide.

Have a wonderful, cool weekend. Some nice rain drifting your way after it rolls over my area for the next several days. I always watch the weather where you are.

Soon the mountains will be topped with snow and gleam in their glorious beauty to showcase the fall colours . My favorite time of year. The cottonwoods are just beginning to get yellow leaves...they are always the first to begin. Has been in the 30's during the night ...just love it.
