I did neither in my trapping career. Learn to clean skin then there is no heavy amount of meat and fat to flesh, only small amounts that is easily removed with a small pelt (stirrup) flesher during the pelt boarding process.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I have done beaver all 7 different ways.
Clean skinning is the best.

I have, sort of, when I rough skinned in the woods, to save on packing. But then I generally tacked them out on a board and skinned off the flesh. Otherwise I clean skin. Why do it twice?

I learned on a beam I can't or won't learn to clean skin.
Feet off hide off In 8 min. Fleshed over the beam and ready for boarding In about 14 min. And no touch up once It's nailed. About 22 min for most any beaver. I have slowed down a bit at my advanced age. LOL

I have fleshed 2 different ways. Tacking the hide to the board and going over it with a beaver knife. Now trying to learn on the beem so I can speed it up a bit hopefully.

To flesh or clean skin with a knife you must first learn and be very experienced at sharpening a knife in the right manner.
Haven't got as far as clean skinning yet still flesh beaver on the beam with a two handle

That’s how i do it and about the same time, I always wonder when someone says it takes them a half hour or longer to skin one and as long or longer to flesh one, always makes me wonder what or how their doing things

Not having a properly conditioned knife is the biggest problem for most. When you're knife is in bad shape, your technique suffers. As does the results

About 60% of any beaver flesh can be removed with the dull side of your knife. And If your not squaring up the dull edge your going to be working to hard. That dull edge after a while gets a rounded edge. Put a file to It and square It up. Makes a big difference.
