Anyone know what this plant is? I don't remember seeing it before, but this year I have a bunch of it. It resembles the American Burn Weed on my property, but when I look at it next to my Burn Weed it looks much different in person.

Brain Fart! I know what it is, but can't nail down the name. Grrr. Roadside plant, has a small pretty yellow flower, spreads by seed like crazy. It will come to me later.

Without seeing the leaves, it looks like wild lettuce. It has a milky sap.

Fireweed (Erechtites hieraciifolius) possibly, or horseweed (Erigeron canadensis). Looks more like fireweed but I could be wrong. Hard to tell with no leaves.

Looks like one of the king devils...check 'Hieracium'

It looks like wild lettuce to me too. It loves to grow in the gap you can't mow, next to buildings.

You can rule out Fire Weed.

Pay attention to the scientific name. Many plants have common names are the same, that's where that scientific name comes into play. I think that you are thinking of the purple flowered fireweed, that would be Chamaenerion angustifolium. I am talking about Erechtites hieraciifolius. After looking into that species further it is also called American burnweed or pilewort.

Seeing the leaves would be helpful, but what is shown looks a lot like

Several species of wild lettuce (Lactuca spp., Asteraceae family) are common in nurseries and landscapes and are very similar to sowthistle (Sonchus spp.). This is wild lettuce from my farm.



The lowest leaves are gone already. When the plant is young, it resembles domestic, leaf lettuce. It's got much more latex than domestic lettuce. It's a mild hallucinogen, that some people use medically.

I just got back to the truck. I've been cutting buckthorn the past few hours.

Here's a picture of the leaves. It has really small leaves. This plant seems to like the logging road we made a couple years ago. I didn't seem to have it last year, but last year we mowed early & I did not mow this year.

Try horseweed. According to Google anyways.

Horseweed it is. Thanks guys! I'm late in getting to it unfortunately, but I think I'll mow it with a D.R Trimmer Mower this week. It's a native, but seems rather obnoxious.

No! Its pigweed. You need a castrater!

The guy at the Extension office told me to try to bag up the seed portion of the plants.

The fluff carrying the marestail seeds is hard to contain once mature. The slightest breeze or motion launches it. Mowing kills marestail after a few cuts.

Wow, I might look into that app. I need an app like that. I plan on mowing tomorrow so I spent 2 hours tonight bagging up horseweed tops that had seeds. I came upon a patch of this strange looking large weed:...I'm thinking it might be a good test for the 'Seek' app. This tall thing has a base that looked like a pine seedling but obviously it's not a pine. I got behind in mowing and feel like I'm driving thru the bush.

I finally got around to getting the 'seek' app set up on my phone tonight. I think it will be beneficial.

I don't have an iPhone but I haven't found an app yet that I like better than Seek.

I have been using Picture This and it has been spot on. I started out confirming plant ID with a google search and it was always right

A couple of other apparent ID app alternatives, which were mentioned at today's invasive workshop that I attended are apparently called Plant Snap and Google Lens

I have the app "Picture This". It is also a great plant ID app.
