Anyone know what this plant is? I don't remember seeing it before, but this year I have a bunch of it. It resembles the American Burn Weed on my property, but when I look at it next to my Burn Weed it looks much different in person.

Brain Fart! I know what it is, but can't nail down the name. Grrr. Roadside plant, has a small pretty yellow flower, spreads by seed like crazy. It will come to me later.

Without seeing the leaves, it looks like wild lettuce. It has a milky sap.

Fireweed (Erechtites hieraciifolius) possibly, or horseweed (Erigeron canadensis). Looks more like fireweed but I could be wrong. Hard to tell with no leaves.

It looks like wild lettuce to me too. It loves to grow in the gap you can't mow, next to buildings.

Pay attention to the scientific name. Many plants have common names are the same, that's where that scientific name comes into play. I think that you are thinking of the purple flowered fireweed, that would be Chamaenerion angustifolium. I am talking about Erechtites hieraciifolius. After looking into that species further it is also called American burnweed or pilewort.

Seeing the leaves would be helpful, but what is shown looks a lot like

Lactuca
Common Name(s): Wild Lettuce
Phonetic Spelling
lak-TOO-kuh
Description
Several species of wild lettuce (Lactuca spp., Asteraceae family) are common in nurseries and landscapes and are very similar to sowthistle (Sonchus spp.). These species are winter annuals but may also germinate in the spring or summer in irrigated nursery crops or landscapes. Seedlings form a rosette of waxy leaves with variable, lobed leaf margins. Wild lettuce leaves are similar to sowthistle leaves but lack prickles on leaf margins. In warm weather, plants bolt to about 3 to 4 feet tall, but some species may reach 8 feet in height. Flowers are pale yellow and form on branched heads. Seedhead is similar to a dandelion but smaller. Seeds have a pappus that aids wind and water dispersal. Avoid letting plants go to seed. Consider a preemergence broadleaf herbicide labeled for use.

This is wild lettuce from my farm.

The lowest leaves are gone already. When the plant is young, it resembles domestic, leaf lettuce. It's got much more latex than domestic lettuce. It's a mild hallucinogen, that some people use medically.

I just got back to the truck. I've been cutting buckthorn the past few hours.

Here's a picture of the leaves. It has really small leaves. This plant seems to like the logging road we made a couple years ago. I didn't seem to have it last year, but last year we mowed early & I did not mow this year.

Here's some marestail aka horseweed, next to wild lettuce (with a hitch hiker) for comparison.

Plants can look very different over their geographic range.

Marestail or Horseweed and the very first picture that you show are defiantly not the same plant. The very first plant that you show is wild lettuce. Bob

Horseweed it is. Thanks guys! I'm late in getting to it unfortunately, but I think I'll mow it with a D.R Trimmer Mower this week. It's a native, but seems rather obnoxious.

The fluff carrying the marestail seeds is hard to contain once mature. The slightest breeze or motion launches it. Mowing kills marestail after a few cuts.

I found a great free phone app called "Seek" for plant identification. You take a couple pictures of the plants and it does a pretty good job identifying them.

Wow, I might look into that app. I need an app like that. I plan on mowing tomorrow so I spent 2 hours tonight bagging up horseweed tops that had seeds. I came upon a patch of this strange looking large weed:...I'm thinking it might be a good test for the 'Seek' app. This tall thing has a base that looked like a pine seedling but obviously it's not a pine. I got behind in mowing and feel like I'm driving thru the bush.

I finally got around to getting the 'seek' app set up on my phone tonight. I think it will be beneficial.

iPhone has a plant I’d app built in now.

Take a picture.
Select the picture
Tap the “I” in the bottom center
Tap plant id and wait a second for results

I have been using Picture This and it has been spot on. I started out confirming plant ID with a google search and it was always right

My iphone is old, it does not have plant ID option

A couple of other apparent ID app alternatives, which were mentioned at today's invasive workshop that I attended are apparently called Plant Snap and Google Lens
