I just got some permission on a big piece of farmland I’m so excited. I can trap whatever I can catch out there but he has a bad beaver problem like he’s tearing out a dam from a culvert everyday. So I really want to catch at least some of them for him. I’ve never even been trapping near beaver so this is all very new to me and will be a learning experience I’m sure.
I’d like to use snares as I have some of them and I do not want to mess with big body grips. The only problem I’m having is I don’t know how to go about drowning them. I understand the basics of a drowning pole but I don’t know if the snare will be tight enough to keep the beaver from backing out. So my only other idea I can conjur up is a kill pole that he wraps around and either chokes out or drowns. If you have any ideas on what I should do please feel free to either message me or comment. Thank you.

Why do you have to kill them with the snares? We catch them alive in snares, dispatch when we get there. A lot easier to make sets and move on without messing with drowning equipment.

/\. This. I wouldn’t worry about drowning rigs with snares. They aren’t going anywhere.

Really? Wow I thought for sure they’d chew out but if that works that would be great and it would be way faster but now for my next question what are you guys anchoring with a piece of rebar or a cable stake?

Most places you need to anchor for beaver is very sofy/mucky. You will need long stakes. ...maybe 4 feet long if the ground is very soft. You may be able to reach a larger tree >6 " or so. Attach and anchor down low near tree base.....underwater if possible...beaver may chew down that tree.

Can use long extension cables to reach solid anchoring location. Usually the longer the snare (with and extension) the less pull on the anchor. Beaver cant get any upward pull on the anchor.

I don’t know who designed it or made it but I’m sure a search online would turn it up. I used grade stakes with the #9 wire at the top to hold the snare up in runs etc. the stake had a piece of cable attached thru bottom and a quick link attached the snare to the cable/stake. When driven in the mud the stake swelled a small amount and had tremendous holdi g power. I’ve caught 60lb beaver and huge otters and never had one get loose or attempt to chew it or the cable. I think I have one I can PM you a picture of in a little bit.

Yes...wooden stakes, sharpened on one end, do hold very well.

If you catch a beaver in a live holding snare,on land, away from water,in the heat of the summer he will die from hyperthermia.
There are lots of better, more humane methods.
Footholds on positive drowners, submerged snares, or good strong 330's

Do it get hotter in Canada than in southern US? I've never had a beaver die in a snare that was unable to get back to water....and I've caught many at crossovers and the water's edge that couldnt get in back to water. 24 hour check here, though.

Yes it gets hot here in summer.
They die quick from overheating with their dark fur,The carcasses was so hot on one it was uncomfortable on the fingers removing the castor.I always tried to let them get to water where they can cool, but things happen sometimes.

It is easy enough to find a spot to submerge a snared beaver that there is no need to hold them alive away from water here.I wont take the chance anymore.

My experience that our beaver fight extremely hard non stop until dead from the heat.Snares set midday and checked next mid day.It is often 35c here in summer. So yes very hot.

The reason that beaver die so fast when struggling in the heat is their dark fur causes them to heat up quickly and they have no way to dissipate rising body heat. They dont sweat like humans and cant pant like land animals.

This is the simple cheap stake and snare support I was talking about. It held this otter just fine.
