Quick question.. never trapped wolves before. Maybe this year or next.
Would a Wolf fang with 18" of 7x7 1/8" cable be efficient enough to hold a wolf or should I stock up on finned super stakes?
Any other ideas or knowledge is always welcomed.
Thanks in advance..

It will depend on the soil your working with. In good clay type ground you would be Ok. In loamy or sandy soil they probably won't hold. You can use 2 earth anchors and cross stake just like you would when using re bar. In most cases this set up will hold that wolf.

Thanks Beav.
Part of the area is glacial till so quite a few rocks to go with it all.

I would stick with at least 24" of 1/2" re bar and use 2 and cross stake. Or use some type of drag. 10' of chain and a heavy 2 prong grapnel. Some weight added to the chain in front of the grapnel will keep It on the ground.

Chain stakes, drags, or chained/cabled solid to a tree. I've known guys to use wolf fangs and have them work fine, I've never tried them though. I can always find rocks when I try and drive a stake, I could hit rocks driving a stake in my garden, I swear! Earth anchors/superstakes, whatever brand or homemade imitation you prefer, will drive through rocks better than wolf fangs; I believe. If there is any doubt in your mind about it holding, attach a drag for insurance.

I'm sure you could use cross staked rebar in the right ground and have it hold just fine, like Beav recommends. But, if you are having problems driving one stake in the ground, you are going to have twice as many problems driving two. And carrying a bunch of rebar stakes will take up a lot of room. Dealing with frozen ground and stakes can be a real pain also.

Thanks, I have been looking at different hammers / mini splitting mauls to assist with the 24" rebar. I currently use 18" and I know that sometimes that is a pain so I was going to try to beef up my hammer a bit.
I like the idea of a drag for back up and cable around a tree. Do you think 1/8"cable would suffice?

JumperZee on here cables most of his wolf traps to trees with 1/8" cable and I don't believe he has ever had a problem. I've done it, but not as often, or only as backup. Can't say I've ever caught a wolf in a trap solely cabled to a tree. Some of my traps have 8-10' of chain attached, to attach a drag to. I've took that and used a quicklink to attach around a tree quite a bit, that works well but the tree has to close to the set and not too big.

I know this thread is kinda old but I had an odd idea.. using the Wolffang if i was to use 2 of them on 1 trap connected with an ez lock thing. Or something similar? I would put the anchors a few inches apart not in the same hole.

I thing that would work if you drove them in at opposing angles like if you were double staking. For wolves I use two opposite facing quiklinks, like when anchoring for climbing, and a dab of locktite on the threads never hurts.
