I want to start tanning my fur this year but I really don’t want to have to spend all of that time breaking those hides by hand so what size fur tumbler should I buy or build I’ve heard everything from 6 foot to a normal household dryer so I hope someone can help me out. Thanks

Softening a tanned skin is not that hard to do as long as all the tanning procedures are done correctly.

When I tan fur there isnt much breaking involved, more like a little stretching.
There are a few things that can cause stiff or rattly leather.Incomplete rehydration, incomplete penetration of the tan,and insufficient penetration in the fibres of the stuffing oil.
The first is often the cause of the second and third

I wouldn’t doubt that it was lack of penetration as I used the orange bottle trappers formula won’t make that mistake again but this was just a yearling doe that my niece shot so I’m not too upset if it doesn’t turn out

Clothes dryers are very cheap or even free at times, I'd try it for myself before I made a big investment in a fur tumbler. My guess is it'll work just fine with a few baseballs or softballs in there. May take some time though. I use one to tumble furs just to make them look better for the fur buyer, does a pretty fine job IMO. Throw these in there 1 1/2" ball bearings , sure they may eventually beat up the dryer but it'd be a long time before they knocked a hole in it.
