Some old trappers (like Thorpe) would drag a skinned animal to a concealed bait location near his sets as a draw station. Out west I knew a trapper that would drag a dead hog behind his sand rail as he drove down the desert two tracks, some of these drag lines would be over 50 miles long. Both methods seemed to work. Butcher and Dailey use to sell a trailing lure to apply to the sole of you boots. Dragging beaver out of the ponds has shown me that predators will follow that trail.

How many of you make a drag trail or carcass draw near your sets?

Matt Jones shows dragging beaver around for coyotes to trail into the snares in Coyote Chaos.

I don't do the drag a carcass thing but I do use some long distance call lure like Gusto. If my carcass dump Is near a tree I'll hang a scent soaked rag In the tree. Or if I'm not near any trees I'll place a tall stick In the area of my carcass dump and add some call lure.

The only scent trail I make is dragging the carcass bait from the truck to the station. Ravens flocking to the site do the attraction better than a long scent trial.

I have found that leaving my bait piles or carcass dumps out In the open has worked better then placing them back In heavy cover. I think the coyotes are just more at ease out In the open.

I just place the dumps about 20 yards from cover. If I'm foot hold trapping then I stay at least 20 yards away. If I'm snaring I just find where the coyotes are leaving or entering that cover.

Yes you are correct. Baits in the open, will out produced baits in thick cover. Coyotes/wolves want to see, both approaching and while they're on it, if there’s danger from other predators, thus the best sites are in the open and ringed by heavy cover to hang snares in. All you basically need, for the ideal station, is an opening large enough for “large birds of prey” to land directly into, thus generally no birds walking in on trails with snares, and coyotes/wolves have the protective cover going to the bait.
