Ed Schneider recently shared a video of an interesting set and I was curious if anyone used it. The video was the Seldom Fales Disco Set on youtube.
Basically, the dirt is excavated from the hole and left in front of the hole were most would normally bed their trap. The trap is then bedded along the edge of this dirt pile so when the animal comes to work the hole they have to work it at a 45...right on the trap. I was curious if anyone here uses it and your results.

I watched Jim Helfrich make a set just like that at one of his demos back in the early 80s.

James lucero has a similar set as well Ive done the same thing but used bobcat urine and droppings on that mound to act as a bobcat scrape on coyotes that wanted to leave the country ive really peaked there interest at times and its saved me done long summers in the sheep

I’ve never seen the set done but I make the set when I find a fresh badger dig. Let him do the hard work of making the mess. I’ll make a few this winter next to regular dirt holes and see what happens.

The trap placement in relation to the prevailing wind direction is very important with all sets. Good job Seldom, us old guys had to figure it out on our own. We listened to the animals....

If your on Location and you have a good bait and lure wind direction Isn't a big deal.

Not one of the dirt holes ( made by coyotes) that I’ve found over the years looks anything like the dirt holes that trappers make . The set that Scott Philips calls the big ugly dirt hole comes closer to the look of a “cleaned out dirt hole “ as I’ve seen . Of the dirt holes I’ve found that still held its contents ( most held pheasant or rabbit) none of them had a backing , none of them were hidden , none of the holes were completely full of dirt and most had some fur or feathers exposed. They typically held as much as a half a rabbit and when I found one that had been cleaned out it seamed the dirt was scattered in 3 directions. Although I’ve not found one with any sort of backing there seems to be a “ back “ to the hole even though they always seem to be dug straight down . The “ back “ of the hole never seems to be disturbed, or should I say it seems they dug from the front and sides . Most of the time the hole seems to be 6 to 8 inches wide at the “ back “ and only slightly wider at the front .
Of the holes I’ve seen ( made by coyotes ) that look like the dirt holes made by trappers , they appear to be in search of mice or other underground rodents. “ ie disco set “
That being said , I think any disturbance of the soil is eye appeal. You add the trap and the smell you think works best , I think the rest is location and trap placement.

I use a double dirt hole Set that works off the principle of the coyote working the set from the side and the dirt in front of the hole as a guide. The double works better because it doesn't matter which side it approaches from the second step is on the pan. Works better on the cautious and shy ones also. It's a modified version of one I saw in one of Charles Dobbins books I believe. I adjusted the spacing of holes and trap location some. A set that works well with less guiding and backing My guess is after the coyote smelled the first hole it has let its guard down when it takes a step to sniff the second hole.

Interesting modification of a set Del Kramer showed in his coyotes 101 book 20 years ago . Where the set in the book put a trap on both sides of the dirt in front of the hole. But interesting

Charles Dobbins shows something similar in his book Rembered that as well. Idea is fox/coyote is educated. And does not not want to step on dirt pattern. His is a bit different. I know I used Dobbins model on a hard to catch matured coyote last season and it worked. This was after I couldn't catch him on typical dirt hole sets. I like the set. And will be using it this season as well.

Interesting modification of a set Del Kramer showed in his coyotes 101 book 20 years ago . Where the set in the book put a trap on both sides of the dirt in front of the hole. But interesting I have DVD that brought forward from the video days by a guy that bought out a lure maker video maker. The trapper was out of Arizona. Good DVD on coyote, fox an cat trapping in Desert county. I cannot remember his name. He demos a set that was a dirt hole with a pile of dirt with a trap close to the hole on each side. That was shot a long time ago. Trapping is like that. A few years ago a very good trapper came out with using wire cubbies in vertical trees with smaller traps for fisher. Everyone was raving. I have a friend that was a real good fisher and mink. trapper. He has shown me those wire cubby set ups probably 8 or 10 years before the DVD and book hit the market. Lot of folks come up with ideas that seem like something no one has ever heard of. I had one of the best trappers in the state teach me how to use 120s to catch fisher in a wood cubby probably ten years before I ever saw that in print. And, yes it was a great method until the state of Maine turned on trappers. Mac Mac
