It depends where you are. I was guiding caribou hunts out on Adak Island (about 1200 miles SW of Anchorage) between 2005 and 2009, there was a company out there processing line caught pacific/grey cod that weighted up to 40 pounds. It was pretty much an untapped resource. The fish were being sent to Portugal for the salt cod market. Some fish buyers from Portugal came all the way out to Adak to check it out because they didn't really believe there were still areas that could produce large cod. Apparently 40 pound cod were common even in the Atlantic at one time.
OP, why the interest in cod?

40 pounds? Wow! I commercial longlined out of Kodiak back in the early 80's, and am certain I have never laid eyes on a cod that went over 25 pounds. There was a time when gray cod were extremely abundant here in sotheast, but a real 20 pounder was not common. A genuine 40 pound cod must be something.
Just doing what I want now.

There was a time when gray cod were extremely abundant here in southeast, I find that interesting. Always assumed the lack of a large biomass of P cod in SE was due to less shallow offshore waters ie the edge of the shelf is pretty close. And that’s why the black cod fishing is so good there, since they live on the edge

OP, why the interest in cod? I like my Fish Fry ! LOL But, more to the point, I have noticed that both the Cod and Haddock in the Restaurants ; and the fresh Haddock and Cod in the Grocery Stores have gotten much smaller. I am paying roughly 50 % more, for a fillet that is up to half the size I used to be able to buy.

^^^^^^ There is a huge amount of fraud that goes on in seafood marketing. I wouls not be at all surprised if a lot of the "cod" you are buying is something else.

Powers that be are working on a way that the consumer can do a quick test to determine species but I suspect that is a long way off. CB, I’m curious what you have to pay for fresh alaska cod fillets. Dock prices have been in the 35 to 45 cents lb range for about 20 years or more. It’s a global commodity that is caught around the world. Just in the Barents Sea the quotas are about triple all of Alaska. Personally I love catching it and eating it, and have hauled millions of lbs over the rails over the years. Pays a lot of the bills . There is a good market for the roe and the milt. Yes, Koreans pay good money and consume a lot of cod milt. No thanks

The fillets are no where near a Pound in weight. Usually 1/2 to 2/3 of a Pound.
