How many of you trap on national Forrest land or public land, and are allowed to use snares?

No public land snares here except for beaver if you have a permit for that particular spot.

Are you looking for guys in your home state or anywhere. All I trap is state and forest

I'm looking for any state, we have thousands of acres of Federal land, and commerical forest lands that are open for trapping, but we can not use snares on them for canines or bobcats. We can use them for beaver, but I believe has to be on a drowning rig.

You're right,they have to be used with a drowning rig.Until Michigan changes its regs on snares for canines I won't waste another minute setting them or dollar buying them.I caught some,and had far more problems than its worth.The biologist in charge when the regs were adopted told me according to their stats success rate using them was at "around 60%". And he said "... I can live with that ".

Come to Florida, that is the only thing allowed. 24hr check… expect a lot of pigs.

It's legal here but we can use dogs for rabbit deer and birds. I personally wouldn't do it on public land here just because of that situation. Our public land gets pretty crowded during the season but if there was a large expanse that dogs weren't allowed on I would consider it just because of the weight reduction. I really enjoy snaring hogs . I mainly use RAM power snares but I have some I built for them and they are long.

We can use them here in Idaho, but on public land they can't be used til after mid Nov. Too many bird hunters out with their dogs before then anyways, just have to be aware if any outfitters are out chasing cats during the winter so we plan accordingly.

In my experience it's less than 40 percent retention rate. The bio is on drugs LOL.. I will not use a tool that a coyote may or may not chew out of and has to live or die with a necktie.. When all that's actually needed is a good BAD..

Been there and done that.It made me sick,after coming up on a set and finding a coyote chewed thru the cable and ran off ,to travel done a trail a couple of miles away with a couple of inches of fresh snow and come across a coyote track that was dragging a cable around his neck.Totally preventable if they'd pay attention to us.As it stands,if this sort of thing was brought to their attention their reaction would probably to outlaw them again instead of fixing the problem.

Ya Buck were stuck with it now, If they'd just do away with 4.25 stop on the loop it might be doable. I spoke with a man that was at the meeting were the snare regs were discussed. It was supposed to start the CR season 12\1 but that got changed to 1/1 . And they added the 4.25 stop without discussion. I've got more respect for a coyote than to let them chew out to live or die with a cable around their neck....

You guys from Mi may as well fight to make the regulations better, you really have nothing to lose.

Using foot holds when the snows piles up is difficult,but doable.Cable would be easier but not with the regs we're saddled with.We used to have an outdoor radio show on every Saturday morning out of Escanaba,he had a man and his daughter as guests that had 2 expensive German Shepard type breeds get caught and die in cables under our old regs.I had heard about this incident and the story behind it.These two were obviously shills for other groups,they trashed anything and everything cable related.They forgot to mention the dogs were running loose(against the law),they were caught on private property(trapper was totally legal),and the landowner came out in full support of the trapper on his property.So I called in and reminded them,talk about dead air,they didn't have one thing to say .Of course,they were pushing,along with the houndsmen,for getting rid of cables.The DNR listened to them,then came up with the 4.25" loop as a compromise,once again the houndsmen came out on top with trappers taking it in the shorts.

With that 4.25 loop stop, you can forget about fox. Might as well have them sticking up your butt.

I think it is only wolf snares you can't use until after mid November. Interesting how people view things differently in different parts of the state. I would have never thought of the mid November start being due to bird hunters (we don't have bird hunters here on public ground, the birds are pretty much all on private farmland) I assumed the late start was to avoid all the deer and elk hunters finding snared wolves. Here you'd be hard pressed to find an area without houndhunters unless you are trapping close to the highway. I do notice a lot less bobcat hunters when I hunt southern Idaho, but if I get in areas with lions I see more lion hunters than I see houndmen up north. Personally as a houndman the only snares I worry about much are power snares or snares with kill springs. You'll seldom get a dog in anything but a wolf snare anyways, and as long as you don't have a kill spring on it dogs that are used to being tied up won't fight it. Combine that with all the collars we have around hounds necks and it is just a inconvenience hiking in and finding the dog and releasing it out of the snare
