Hi all, I'm taking up coyote trapping this fall and have another wax dirt question. The black soil I'm using is around 50% sand -50 dirt and it's pretty rich in decomposing plant material prior to sifting. I made a batch in the nesco and it took on a "cooked" odor- not a burned smell. Thinking I may have scorched it I made a small batch in a vaccum bag and simmered it, pretty much the same odor, smells cooked. Has anyone used "smelly" dirt with success? Thinking I may have to go to waxed sand for this year otherwise.

I’d go with making wax sand takes less wax and traps bed nicer in it. When I get dirt for wax dirt I find the dirt with very little plant material if any in it still trying to break down.

The more organic material the more wax it takes, some dirt just naturally stinks. Sand has very little odor and no organic material. I add a bit of loamy soil with very little organic material to add color to the sand so its easier to blend. I use that on bare ground and use pure sand when the snow hits.. I add the loam at 1 gallon to 4 gallons of sand.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

Thanks for the replies, sand seems to be the consensus. Keats reccomends coarse sand, what is the reasoning? I would guess less wax would be needed as the particles get larger, does coarse sand pack better?

Once waxed it all beds well. Coarse means less wax and better drainage…. Play sand works fine for me.

Big drawback is the weight. That’s a bigger problem for some people than others. It just depends on how you carry your stuff when you trap.
