Anyone use beef liver as a base for bait before? How did it work out? Thinking about just chunking it up and putting sodium benZoate on it

Any flesh will work if the person can figure out the added formulation components and aging time frames. Cooked beef liver with onions works better than fresh beef liver. And I can tell you that is the only way I am touching beef liver, making bait LOL

Liver tissue breaks down quickly and tends to be a very runny watery type base material when aged. Particularly if you grind it. Using fresh frozen chunks would be my use as a stand alone. The liquid break down material however would be a good ingredient. All organ meat is good bait. Many meat types and odors will attract a canines interest.

I am with Ron, Liver and onions is the best. smile

Unlike Bob I go to BK for a whopper when the wife fixes liver and onions, can’t even stand the smell of it “ which gives me an idea” . I have had very good luck in the past with chunked deer liver ( about 1 1/2 to two inch pieces) . I freeze it in cut up chunks and put it in the hole frozen.

This being said I’ve never been afraid to experiment with new smells and I intend to try frying some on the pellet grill . I don’t mind the smell of raw liver but can’t stand the smell of it being fried, it has a very strong smell to my nose . It may not be anything more than a curiosity for a coyote but will definitely have a strong odor.

Didn’t intend to highjack your post JBR just can’t help but wonder what guys think ?

Definitely worth a try. My bet is attractive to the canines.

Nothing better than sauted liver with onions smothered in thick gravy, American fried potatoes, and honey, baking powder biscuits.

I beg to differ, there are a heck of a lot of things better than that! You've got a whole deer, elk, beef, whatever to eat; why would you want to start in on the guts?

I'd rather have fresh backstrap fried up with the onions and fried taters, good biscuits; and feed the liver to my dogs.

I used fresh chunked deer liver last year for coyotes and had excellent results. So many gut piles for them to scavenge off of that they are less likely to refuse any set that looks like another coyote has stashed any extras for later. I plan on trying some variations using liver for bait this year and hope to have the same or better results as last season. Liver and onions rock!
