So, i am very wind oriented when coyote trapping and cautious of them approaching from the downwind side and make my set accordingly. Derfinitely have digouts from the back every year because of a changing wind. I set out 30 sets over the weekend and about have were for a SE wind because thats what we have until thursday. W-NW is out prevailing but figured with the near future make more than normal for the SE. Anyway, my first coyote for the year was on a flat set setup for a NW wind and it blew from the east-southeast all night. So, thoughts on if wind matters less than me and others think? Just found it strange. This coyote would have had to be in 1-2 foot tall grass to work from the "downwind" side last night.

i try to set on the north or west side of trails as that will blow any scent across the trail, roadway, gate etc but in the same aspect i trust my lures and bait will make any coyote or fox work a set no matter the wind direction but always have a few that for some reason will work the set from the back side

Location location location. If your close to their travel way and your using a decent bait/lure the wind Isn't a big factor.

I have several locations where I always put in 2 to 3 sets, and try to hit both sides of possible wind or travel directions.
Also certain land features work no matter what the wind direction for me. Outside fence corners...here I use a big hole and big dirt pile outside the hole. Coyotes running either direction along that fence get a good visual set to see as they approach the corner. All you have to do is catch their attention. Once close enough they will smell bait or check it out and you got em.

Never fails.

Get 150-200 sets poked in with “prevailing” winds in my mind and it flips around and blows outta the SE for two weeks.

They still seem to catch.

The prevailing wind is just one thing to consider, thermals, etc. Sometimes the sets on the other side catch the most, use shorter backings so they'll walk all over it. Give um a focal point that they can see.

After deer hunting this past weekend I can tell you with 100% certainty that the “forecasted” wind is just a guess or a majority of the time guess, lol. What it does 25-30ft up may be completely opposite on the deck.
If I’m on tracks I’ll set the center or both sides and sometimes all three.

Set prevailing wind on location period!!!
Next trap placement accounts for a awful lot of catches imo even if some say it don 't. And if really concerned about wind set a second trap 9inch back behind backing .
